When I received the Sparrow Special from Abe Elias (Canranger) I also received this knife, the Boreal which is part of Abe's Bushcraft Series and a regular offering.

He offers this model in both Carbon and Stainless Steel with 1095 and ATS-34 being available on the base model. He also offers a variety of natural and synthetic handle materials but I chose Green Canvas Micarta for its toughness and utilitarian good looks.

Specs:
  • 1/8" thick 1095
  • 4.5" blade
  • 9.5" OAL
  • Green Canvas Micarta Scales with Red Liners
  • 7.25 oz. (205 g)

The handle on this knife is quite comfortable and I suspect, having handled the Sparrow Special for many months, that this one will be just as useful for long-term knife work. At 1/8" thick it should slice and cut like a champion and I'm pairing it with my Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe so chopping won't be a necessary test on this knife.

In the coming days, weeks, and months I plan on using this knife extensively for the type of work Abe designed it to do. I'll be working with green and seasoned wood, food prep, (fingers crossed) cleaning game, and the usual everyday knife tasks (loose threads, fingernails, etc.)

I know Abe's heat treat of 1095 is spot on after using the Sparrow Special and the blade shape and geometry on this one makes it seem a formidable tool for bushcraft.

I look forward to keeping you updated on the progress with this one.

Looking forward to your tests. The Boreal Bushcraft is a great looking knife. I like the Carolinian Bushcraft even better if it's the same knife but with the edge extending all the way to the handle. It's hard to tell from the photo on the Diving Sparrow site.

Ordered one recently, looks sooooo handy, the handle, the blade shape, clean, simple elegant.
