Hey guys, I've trawled through the threads here, and have read and learned a lot about stropping (the 'art' of... ;))

Question:

can you make a DIY compound?? If so, any recommendations on materials??

Also, I have a small tub of metal polishing compound that came with my Dremmel tool... it looks like its grainy/coarse... so am I right to assume that I can use this??

Thanks guys...

Alex

I've always used automotive rubbing compound (the red stuff, not the stuff designed for clear coat). It seems to work pretty well. I've never used anything else so not sure how it compares.

thanks guys, the polish I used last night from Dremmel works a treat! just need to practice my stropping... mind you, I've convexed and stopped a Busse Fusion Battle Mistress, so its a large blade to get to hair popping sharp !

Thanks for your responses

I like to use Flitz. Just squirt some out onto a piece of leather, rub it in really well and there ya have it

I use mineral oil and whatever abrasive powder I can find for my leather strops. To save money, I bought laxative grade mineral oil from the pharmacy. My blades get 'poop-yer-pants' sharp when I use it. Last powder used with the mineral oil and leather was boron carbide.

It will with some steels, but they have to be fine-grained and have small carbides for it to happen in a reasonable amount of time. It'll work on something like a Case CV blade, but might not be seen on S30V.

Any body know what a Grill Brick is?

I am curious as to weather or not the dust from one of them would do much good.

Just go to your local paint store or HD and purchase a tube of green pigment. This is very cheap and consists of chromium oxide and carrier.

If you are really cheap, just paint your leather with green paint.

a grill brick is made from pumice. Don't know how knife steel would react to ground volcanic rock, but it doesn't do much harm to a flat-top griddle. it does abrade it, though. Perhaps more deeply than you may want for stropping.
