I cannot really think of a time I thought I really wise I had a swiss army knife, I could use any heavy folder for opening a can and a really sharp knife will take the place of scissors, So do you who own them really use them much for stuff a ordinary folder couldn't do?

Also what is the best model to get? I want a balance of size and usefulness.

I would really like a mechanics model of SAK, problem is they are a little pricy, and i can quickly destroy a SAK.

Haha. opening a can with a heavy folder.... ? why would one do such a thing.

Our "heavy duty" folders are more than capable of doing such a thing but a SAK is a much better option. Your folder will become dull and useless rather quick if you do thing like that, when a small, almost unnoticed SAK could be carried on you and carry out many of the tasks. It's all about the right tool for the right job.

I always have a vic farmer on me, along with either a spyderco chinook3 or a buck 110. Maybe try to carry both for a while and see how it works out?

Yes, every day. I use the bottle opener as a screwdriver the most. I like the Tinker as it is lightweight and not too bulky.

They are precise tools. I have several. The scissors give control on cuts like paper and especially dealing with my kids on band-aids and stuff. I drink decent beer .. bottle opener. Camping and BBqs' ... canned food ... can opener. I like to eat ribs ... tooth pick. The saws cut great for fire starters, hiking sticks and tent stakes ... I also wear glasses ... little screw drivers. As I get older i have hair in my ears and my kids get splinters ... tweezers. Goes on and on ... great tools !

Hi SBaker34 -

I absolutely do use my SAK Waiter - it is listed as my favorite knife in my profile, and while I love them all, I always have my Waiter with me.

The knife above has been used / sharpened so much that it is now almost a wharnie!

Many people prefer a Farmer, but for day-to-day carry, I prefer the Waiter.

As to the second part of your question, I normally do not try to open bottles (capped or corked) with a folder, nor do I try to open cans with a folder when the Waiter can do it handily. When I need tweezers, a typical frame-lock folder will not do the trick.

However, if cutting is my only need, then most times a typical folder will do the job just as well.

best regards -

I have carried a Victorinox Farmer for 20+ years. It got used for everything form opening cans and carving trap parts, cutting steak opening packages etc. etc.

For me the best mix of tools is the Farmer model or the Pioneer Harvester model. Since I usualy have a P-38 on me I carry the Pioneer Harvester these days.

I have used the saw more times than I can count for everything from cutting branches, to inletting drywall for work.

Great knives. The longer you carry one the more uses you come up with for em. Then you wind up feeling naked without one.

I carried one (a Huntsman) from the age of 12 to nearly 30 as my only edc. I used it daily for one thing or another - and I used it pretty hard and even abusively at times. It has its scars, but is still completely functional.

The only implement I didn't seem to have much regular use for was the saw.

I've used it everyday I've owned it. Super Tinker. Mutiple tools is what makes em great. Especially screwdrivers and scissors. The punch also is quite handy.

Love my tinker, soldier, explorer and yeoman. Still, nothing beats my very first vic: spartan. I got it around 20 years ago, It goes strong today. I recently made scale swap for it and its looking so good. My faveourites are 2-3 layer SAK's for urban and 3-4 layer ones in hike.

Excellent, versatile, light and useful tool that is recognised world wide and most people don't blink an eye for SAK, even if they would be terrified knives generally.

I EDC my alox Soldier very often. It's non-threatening and very useful.
Most used is of course the blade, and the bottle opener also sees a lot of use (those Belgian beers...). The screwdrivers and can opener are occasionally used as well (I rarely eat canned food, and most cans can over here be opened by pulling a loop). The awl is actually used least of all.
A very good knife, good enough for most EDC use.

I use my Cybertool 29 almost every day, often many times a day. Not so much the blades, but I keep them very sharp (especially the pen blade) just in case. The main blade mainly gets used when I don't want to scare the sheeple. I've never used the can opener that I can remember. Never really had a use for the toothpick either. But the other tools I use much more often. Occasionally I use the reamer at work. The ink tube pen gets used when I forget a pen. I've used the corkscrew from time to time. I don't drink crappy beer, so I need a bottle opener. The jewelers screwdriver I use to tighten my sunglasses (and other people's glasses on occasion), and the multi-bit driver gets used all the time. A screwdriver is always handy to have around, and being a knife knut, having a T8 and T10 TORX bit is always good to have on hand.

I've carried the aluminum body Victorinox Soldier (large blade, reamer, small and large screwdriver, can and bottle opener) for over 20 years. It really comes in handy.

I just recently started carrying a CQC10 for heavier cutting. Love them both.

I like leathermen (Leathermans?) better. The juice S2 is supposed to be good. Also, I like the Victorinox Trekker.

The ''Rucksack'' model does everything that I need a SAK for, with no extra useless appendages.

Yeah I use mine to open boxes and do other stuff all the time.
