Does a Civilian trainer exist?

This had been a stalward of the Spyderco catalogue for over 20 years, and with the advent of the waved Matriarch 2, I know that there must be renewed interest. I know that James Keating's company used to make one as did Commtech, the guys who put out the DVD, I think. Nowadays, nothing is around. There are Endura, Delica, Yojimbo trainers, why not this very specialized one, in wood, rubber, or even the lifelike ones you guys make like the other models?

I ordered an Endura trainer, which is a pretty good compromise, because it shares handles with the Matriarch 2 (and I get that awesome red to put on one of those), is roughly a similar size to all of Spyderco's large-ish knives, so it's good that it exists. I wonder if I will have to carve my own lookalike out of wood, ha.

The Civilian was designed to be used by people with little or no training. An effective trainer (same blade shape and weight but no edge) would be nearly as dangerous as a live blade. Stick with an Endura trainer, your sparring partner will thank you.

Thank you for the info! See, that is exactly why I went with a trainer in the first place, I originally thought "Wait, this is the price of a standard Endura, why don't I just dull that and use it as a trainer?" but I figured the way it's ground thinly, the edge and all, the tip, it would not be safe like a knife specifically rounded like the trainer.

Yeah. The Endura trainer really is good middle ground. Yojumbo, Civvie, Ma2, Lil Matriarch Janich-fied Endura... the Endura trainer could probably imitate 'em well enough.

The Millie and Native Chief are Spyderco's best defensive models. All unrequited trainer nagging should be directed accordingly :)

I just got my first Millie, an old, old school CPM-440V version, but I like it very much. I would like a Native Chief, seems like a great model.
Waved Yojumbo (of course aftermarket wave) is a top contender, too!

Hi Hashishiin,

There were a number of fixed blade trainers made by different people. James Keating produced a very nice wood one that I have somewhere. We never made a trainer for the model.. In fact we didn't even show it in the catalog for the first decade we made them. They were low key for professionals.

James Keating also did a video on the Civilian that could probably be found? It was very educational.

Oh yes, I have seen the gorgeous wooden Civvie featured in James Keating's video on the knife, it looks gorgeous! I'd love one of those, may carve my own, actually, it will be a fun project!

I was the guy with the linerless ATS-55 Civilian and the 440V Millie the other day. I love all the variations of that knife. The double-edged and the fileworked Mother of Pearl is just gorgeous. It just desperately needs a way to be waved like the Ma2! Here is me hoping for a wave and a comp lock on the Civvie 2, which I heard has been in the works for a while! Or for a Reverse-S PM2 run, I know that exists as well 😀

Hi Hashishiin,

We serve a wide range of markets. We are knowledgeable in some and ave experts available where we are not. In the world of MBC, we know a great deal, have experts on staff and we move slowly to serve that market. It's a small, but important market.

The Matriarch was made with an FRN handle. More affordable on a professional's salary. Then we added a hook. On the P'Kal, which was a design I developed with Craig and Trace. In an effort to serve all possible needs, we made a removable hook. I'm working on a development of that concept now for the future refinements. It will be a while, but it's "in-the-works".

Oh, I must say that I love both my Matriarchs, always keep one in the end of my right pocket, usually by a PM2! You guys do fantastic work over there, you and Michael Janich and your son. I will be excitedly waiting for what is next 😁

A few years ago, I chose the Matriarch 2 as the souvenir knife for my annual Martial Blade Camp event and asked Steve Rollert of Keen Edge Knives to make trainers for it as part of the package. They turned out great and he added it to his regular production of aluminum trainers:

Steve does awesome work and I highly recommend his trainers!

Stay safe,

Mike
