Or, 1" diameter free hanging ropes (yeah, I'm really fixed on that aren't I; a Freudian therapist would have a field day), etc. Tatami would be an excellent target, but I couldn't find any information in the search engines. If you have alternative soft target methods of testing some of the models for very fast strikes, I'd enjoy the input.

I cut both bamboo and tatami with Japanese swords, never tried with Kukris.

Just remember that real opponents move and have a tendency to want to cut you back :)

Also, remember while you are slashing all those evil mats that a khuks peculiar shape can make it do some ugly things if you lose your grip:eek:

I never considered that possibility, Alf. :D I'd really like to have input on the cutting capability of some of the faster "combat
khukuris".

Thanks

Could really rain on your parade if it flew out of your hand, and interfere, in extreme cases in your marital happiness too :D Caution is certainly the order of the day...

I think a lot of low-budget cutters use newspaper rolls.

Try a Google search for keywords:
tameshigiri newspaper
to find proper instructions.

I think in the H.I. website, I had some posts on my test cutting tests using various H.I. Khukuris. I use Bugei.com tatami, wara, and goza for my tests.

The 20" Sirupati works well for me, as well as the Gelbu Special.

Nice to see you still around, and posting, BA, drop back in more often when you can.

Thank you, Broken Arrow. Your threads will be an important part of my "things to do" list this morning.

Dan :)

Dean, I typed in temeshigiri and newspaper in the search engine, and was successful. Great idea, since finding tatami here would not be the easiest thing; cutting small diameter branches is also an option.

It would be interesting to see how they fared as far as slicing is concerned, wouldn't it?

Cutting 4" bamboo is indeed impressive. The thing that strikes me as most impressive is that your're effecting this trmendous slicing power with an object held in one hand, not two... Good stuff for sure Broken Arrow! Thanks, and look foward to any updates with your impressive tameshigiri, and support of the khukuri.

P.S. Are these systems that teach specific use of the khukuri in Nepal or elsewhere not affiliated with the military?

We cut live trees up to 3". We use Katana, naginata, and kukris. Kukris cut as well as swords with the proper technque. It is really quite something.

Just curious - Which Khukuri have you used for cutting, and how large do you have to go to cut as well - as say - a 20" bladed Wakizashi?

My Katana are 30"
Naginata 24"
Kukri 12"-16" blades

I have had much fun watching men who can cut do so-on live trees. Then walking up and equaly anything they do with a one hand cut from a kukri. It wakes up the Japanophiles who worship the myth of the Japanese blades.

cheers

It must be quite satisfying to actually prove it with field testing. What model khukuri do you like to pit against it's edged cousins?

Thanks, this is the good stuff I like!

Humbling for them at the very least. Give the katana owners a handicap; use your other hand. :) If the khukuri still won, the effect would be devastating!

I've never held a khukuri in my hands, although I have some experience with other weapons. What's the best way to develop a feel for the blade, deflection characteristics, follow through, etc.?
Traditional cutting materials will be difficult to get here... You don't want the khukuri to behave like a boomerang, now do you?

Thanks.:)
