Does anyone know about IPE wood?

A while back I got some IPE wood scales in a swap. I've never encountered it before and all I know is that its hard and needs to be sealed. Does anyone have any experience with this wood? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Matt, maybe I should have typed it ipe, its pronounced like yipee without the "Y". Its a South American hardwood, thats all I know about it.
