Is "White" mineral oil any different than other mineral oils?

It says its food safe which is what I want in case I use my knife for food prep

does it work good for rust prevention

Yes, but it is a light oil and will not last long. It will prevent rust but you will need to
reapply more often than other oils marketed for knives. It is good if you use the knife
for food prep as long as it states food safe. There are also other products out there
marketed specifically for knives that are also food safe.

Absolutely it is. In my experience though, I really only oil my carbon steel blades for storage. If I'm using them, I just keep them clean and dry. I also let a patina form on mine. Not sure if that makes a huge difference. To me a knife is a tool. I don't want to spend a ton of time polishing up a tool just to use it again. A very light (repeat, very light) coating of chapstick is also good if your in a really wet environment. But then clean it off and use mineral oil for storage.

I agree.

To protect 1095 you need either a patina, Vaseline (thin coat, DO NOT use with food), or a Tuff Cloth to wipe it down with daily (I have seen it called food safe, either way the thin coat shouldn't hurt).

I use Mineral Oil on my Carbon Steel knives and on my wood scales. Great stuff and holds up better and longer than I would ever need. I use the heck out of my knives but I am also pretty regular about maintenance. Basically when I clean my guns I clean my knives!

mineral oil wont work?

It will, but it doesn't stay well and doesn't provide that good rust protection. There was a test done here that tested all kinds of different products that prevent rust. Mineral oil was barely better than the control.

Habilis Bushtools makes a great wax for their blades that are 1095 steel, thats food safe. And it comes in a neat reusable tin.

I maintain my slipjoints with mineral oil
A slightly damp toothbrush for the joints
Dry the blade with a cotton cloth then and a slightly damp polyester material cloth for wiping down the blades

No rust and food safe
