Buyer beware and all...I just wanted to pass it on...don't buy from Tristate Camera.

We purchased a Nikon DSLR from them, seemed like a good deal at the time, it turned out to be gray market with no warranty. Not only that they actually raised the price after I placed the online order. I had to call several times to get an RMA number. Then I had to call 4 or 5 times after we returned it and they still hadn't gotten around to processing the refund. Most of the time they will just put you on hold and never bother to pick the phone back up when you call. We had to call the bank and have them reverse the charges to get this settled.

Buy from from someone else if you're in the market for cameras/lenses.

Yeah.....Tristate tried to run a scam on ma a few years back on a Sony Mini DV camera. I ended up buying from Abes, which is a great retailer to deal with. Avoid Tristate at all costs.

Did you find them on Amazon as well?

Online camera retailers have been notorious for scams dating back to when they were mail order outfits. Many of them are that same company operating under different names. Typical scams include not honoring the stated price unless you buy the worthless extended warranty, or charging you separately for the items included in the factory box (like the battery!) www.photo.net has a helpful "neighbor to neighbor" section where you can check on sellers. Some of the reputable ones that I have personally used include:

  • Adorama
  • B&H Photo
  • Beach Camera
  • Midwest Photo Exchange
  • KEH
  • Cameta Camera

Buydig.com located in NJ. I have dealt with numerous times and never an issue. Sends you all of the rebate and registration paperwork. Prices are always reasonable

This has been going on for decades. If the deal is too good to be true, it probably isn't.

A lot of these great deals are gray area merchandise or stuff that's been remanufactured. It's essential to read the fine print.

+1 for B&H Photo. They sell gray market stuff, but it's listed as such (no bait-switch), and they warranty it themselves.

I had a bad experience with B&H a few years ago. But mostly because I was unaware it was gray market (Which they Vaguely mentioned). after I placed the order I got a very rude sales call, informing me that the camera would be useless unless I purchased an overpriced battery, Charger and Memory card. Just be aware what you are getting before you put the money down.

Are you sure that was B&H? That sounds like the usual mail order camera scam, which just about all the vendors in the market except B&H and Adorama are notorious for. B&H doesn't do that.

I am positive it was B&H Photo... I should have read the ad better, after the fact I went back and it did state the camera did not come with a Nikon Warranty (It was a Nikon D200 Body) and there were additional Items recommended when purchasing that item. The part that bothered me was the way I was treated by the sales person, which I am aware can happen with any business.
