Anyone know if there is a quality double bit axe out there with one side having more of a splitting profile and the other having a thinner chopping profile? Seems like this would make a great camp/wilderness tool. But then again I am no axe expert. It's taken me this long to learn how to use one properly rather than just go in swinging.

I've had a Snow and Nealy double bit ax for a couple years now. And I had it profiled just as you described. That thing is big. It's so big that it's all but useless camping - (I got it because I wanted it). It's neat to have, but I've so few occasions to use it that I never developed any skill with it. But it is one way to impress the neighbors. I also have a double bit hatchet (I was curious).

The double bit idea sounds good in theory (one blade for slicing and the other for splitting), but I've never had a call for it in practice. Over time I just found the second blade on the hatchet annoying as I was swinging it.

You may find a good quality single bit tool more useful.

I have a Gransfors scandi forest axe that i love and it's very packable. But it doesn't split like a tool designed for it. I'm sure such a tool would be heavy, I was just curious.

cruiser weight (2 lb) doublebit on a 25" handle is what you want. it's a short edge for dry wood and a long one for green wood, not a splitter. If you're carrying it, that's about as big as is justifiable.

Where do you find such and animal?

Every double bit I've ever seen was this way, I thought that was the point of a double bit...

I have a Reeves with the Sears profile - one side thin, one blunt. You can order it from him with the edges profiled any way you want. Wait time was about 15 months for me. Marbles makes a double. It is cast, pinned head, and very blunt in profile, with both edges the same. It sounds to me that you are looking for a piece like Dick Proeneke used.

I haven't used mine much, but like it.... I've heard that might be some problems with splitting or cracking of top the handle... but that I haven't used mine enough to know.

I picked up an old used Collins d.b. and re-hafted it. It was and is ground that way.--KV

Thanx for sharing this Double Bit Hatchet, I got a 2Hawks, Made by Devin Price, He uses a 6150 carbon steel, He first forges it then machines it to be able to have two close to each other especially in competition Tomahawk s, Mine is a copy of Nessmuk, One thing people don't understand is, George Washington Sears was a small man so he had Bushnell make his or was it Busch and Lomb ? Anyhow he had them custom make it for him and prolly his size, I wish mine fit a 6" body, Nessmuk was 5'6".
