I'm sure your friends " katana " is just some piece of junk from the mall or flea market, and those are not swords ( sword shaped wall hangers ) and never have real edges.

My suggestion is to leave your double bit ( the cutting end of an axe is called the bit because they used to make them by forge welding in a bit of harder Steel , since the body is soft ) axe at home.

If you really have to prove something just bring him over and give him a cutting demonstration on a piece of paper then go to his house for a paper cut test of his sword.

I'm only 21, and even I know that this probably won't end well. When 2 kids go hacking away with a couple of potentially sharp objects someone is gonna get hurt.

I say do it. Obviously its fitted in a good scabbard ??
In a pack with handle sticking out, sounds good to me.

This is Oregon. Most places in Oregon an axe is considered a tool.

Transporting a sword or axe is not necessarily a big deal unless you go to hot spots like schools, banks, federal buildings, etc.

Now, if you are doing something weird with either of those you WILL draw attention and potentially be talked to. Busy body neighbors and people who are afraid of anything out of the ordinary might make a call to LEO.

I posted awhile back about buying a double bit at a flea market, carrying it back to my truck and everyone looked freaked out- especially a bearded guy in a flannel shirt that from all outward appearances looked like a throwback lumberjack - that was Portland.

If you are younger, you might draw attention based on an "up to no good" assumption. If you two decide to have a chop off somewhere outside of your own property near a larger community you might get looks.

Outside of not carrying either in a ready position I don't think there is a legal issue in transporting them.

The community I grew up no one would have thought twice. Just be smart and respectful of property and people and the only problem will be someone else's.

Now, if I got talked to by the cops my dad would have been my biggest fear...

Things are so "dangerous" in today's society I'm surprised any of us made it to adulthood.

Put it in a backpack head down and be sure to cover the handle sticking out with a sock.

You can actually use a fixed blade knife in urban situations once in awhile (prune some rose bushes, sharpen a pencil, slice bread, open a can of sardines) but I have a hard time imagining somebody conjuring up a good excuse for carrying a double bit axe.
I don't think there's any law around here forbidding such a thing (this was a logging town at one time) but J Q Public and the authorities would be eyeing you with extreme suspicion if you entered stores, transit stations and banks or chose to wander along busy sidewalks downtown with one. Maybe you can go forward sporting a cane or a sturdy umbrella. You can injure or immobilize somebody with one of those too if you so choose, and they also won't slow down a belligerent 9mm or a 45 either.

I think 300six has a good point.

Please take what I posted with a grain of salt. I glanced over the fact that you are 16 - absolutely nothing wrong with that - we were all 16 at one point. I spent a fair amount of my childhood with a hatchet or machete in my hand but that may not fly today and where you live.

You really shouldn't "open carry" a sword or axe daily.

My thoughts ran to how we are so wound up as a collective society that boys can't be boys anymore and that sort of colored how I responded.

Transport your stuff discretely and use then them responsibly.

My father would say, "One boy is one boy, two boys are half a boy, and three boys is no boys at all". Meaning that cognitive reasoning and decision making seems to diminish proportionally to the number of boys you have together lol.

*I just Googled that expression and he didn't make it up by any means it seems but it sure doesn't change the fact that anytime I made poor decisions, I wasn't alone...

That was one profound statement ...It be the truth!

When I was 16 (this goes back awhile!) I had no reason or excuse to carry a 'self-defense' axe. Nobody paid any mind to the pulpwood axe, pellet rifle, bow & arrow or scout knife I often had with me while traversing neighbourhoods and public roads over to the wildwoods on weekends though.

Jesus, dude, how beta are you ?

Lol, I'm trying to picture what a mall ninja/troll hybrid looks like. Good one.

This is one of the stranger ones I've heard....

If it was an axe behind the seat of a pickup, I wouldn't see an issue. Riding around town on a bike, in this day & age, I see it going sideways in a hurry. Its all about public perception...

Is it really that bad nowadays? When I see a neighbor with an axe, especially a big axe, I try to avoid them so I don't get roped into some hard work.
The idea of someone going postal with an axe just does not cross my mind. What's next, running away from a guy with a shovel? It's a chickenshit world.

I see from the original question that all you want to do is transport an axe on a bicycle over to a buddy's house. If you tape up the blade with cardboard or some such to protect yourself from accidental cuts it'll also keep nosy neighbours and authorities off your back. Go for it and never waver from telling anyone that asks that it's a working tool.

You are 16. You should be driving/not bicycling.

There's an eye-catching picture somewhere of a grown man in a flannel jacket on a bicycle cycling with a dead deer slung over his shoulders. When you view the hasty drive-by photo you can imagine that the fellow lost his driver's license for a DUI (or some such) but that transport of goods on any sort of wheels sure beat walking.
