double knife sheath

Any thoughts on the practicality of having a sheath that holds two knives, specifically my Project 1 and then a folder like my SERE or BM 720, or even a multi tool. Anyone done this? Did you like it? Thoughts? Suggestions? Is it too heavy for one side? A thigh unit? etc. etc. I don't like clips in pockets so please don't suggest putting the folders there. Should I go with two sheaths? I was planning on having a sheath made up for the project 1 for sure and thought about a second folder/camp knife to accompany it on the same sheath. Should I go with a detachable model for the smaller knife that detaches from the larger project one sheath? Should I use my snaplock security sheaths for my folders from Sastre and just tie them on with 550 cord? I am looking for some thoughts.

Mike Sastre did a wonderful job on the 9 or so concealex sheaths for my different folders this spring so I was going to give him a call again, when I plan to do this, but I wanted to know the practicality of this. I plan on only using it while camping/canoeing. I am just tired of having so many different types of gear on the belt and was wondering how combining things would work.

Thanks for your thoughts and opinions.

I have stayed away from them because of the bulk. Stack them one on top of another you have something that sticks out a lot, stack them side by side and flexibility becomes a problem. Why not a matched pair, will look good together and doesn't have the problems associated with the other styles.

My mom used to tell me "Don't put all your eggs in one basket." I think that applies here.

I would probably put the folder in the Sastre sheath you already have, and wear it on the belt or maybe even neck carry, depending on how comfortable you are with that.

The custom sheathmakers are going to hate me for saying this....

IMHO the ideal piggyback sheath is detachable so you can carry just the smaller knife if you want, and you can even change your mind about which of your smaller knives you want to carry with the big one (or which big one you want to carry with your current favorite smaller knife). Just lay the smaller one on the big one and wrap with a little 550 cord and you're all set. :)

P.S. Or wrap with a lot of 550 cord -- 550 cord is handy stuff to have with you, the more the better....

HMMMMM - detatchable piggy-back ---hmmmm ----- ?? I seem to recall that Sullivan's Holster Shop (makers of Randall sheaths) offers aftermarket sheaths for Randalls with an added sheath for the Randall Tri-athelete as an option. Detachable sounds interesting -- maybe Mike Sastre can gear up???

Wade,

Piggybacking can be done, but is a little tricky in keeping the functionality. I've done a Project One sheath with a Leatherman sheath attached (also removable) for a client that needed to be able to jump out of airplanes with it, yet still have quick access. The part that's tricky is in having enough clearance to draw the piggybacked item and still have good retention/release on the item and still keep the total package to a minimum. I'd be happy to see what I can do for you.

That like many others has been thought about before:

Some options are:

Rob Simocnich makes a "Wilderness" style fixed blade with "Parasite" (parasite slips and locks into handle of the Wilderness")

See it here:

And here:

(scroll down to the latigo model and the SRT model)

Another custom makes with a similar concept is Trace Rinaldi (aptly named the ARMAGGEDON SKS - survival knife system)

See it here:

I know that some Ausies have done similar projects - but our Australian members would probably know more about it.

Hope this helps.
