Of the new (re-)released Cold Steel knives, I'm perhaps most interested in the Mini Recon 1 and the Double Safe Hunter. I can get the current version of the Double Safe Hunter with the plastic clip right now from BladeHQ, but was wondering if it would be worth waiting a bit longer for the newer version that's going to have a steel clip? Also, I'm wondering how Cold Steel's version of 8CR13 is? I haven't been that impressed by my Kershaw Atmos' 8CR13 blade.

I dont have that knife but have the Chinese bush ranger and sr1 lite and both are in 8cr13mov. I find its very easy to put an edge on. feels similar sharpening to me like spydercos Chinese 8cr13mov. mind ya I haven't tested it or anything just how it feels on stones putting edge back on it.

I dont mind 8cr13mov. easy to put edge back on and it holds an edge pretty well. I get it to rust spot pretty easily though. easy to rub away though if tackled right away.

I don't know about Cold Steel, but Spyderco 8Cr13 seems a very good steel. Eric Glesser said they use cryo heat treatment. Cold Steel heat treatment is usually first class, so I'd have high hopes for it.

Just got mine today with the steel clip I already had the plastic clip and didn't like it-but the new CS-DS is my new favorite budget knife, just the blade profile is awesome ,i did some cutting on oak staves did real good, then went to cardboard did surprisingly well (i normally dont care for 8cr)cost 33.00 so very budget friendly
*the metal pocket clip is really nice slides into the pocket beautifully and feels robust and it's nestled in real steel female insert screw threads- unlike the old japan voyagers
*very nice handle thickness(feels great in the pocket) ,good texture on the plastic handles, super comfortable handle with nice ability to choke -up on the blade
*double safe locking mechanism is excellent, and the knife is 4 oz. so its not too heavy just, my .02 cents brothers

would love to see an upgrade in the future i.e. g10,no liners and s35vn steel and made in Taiwan(almost like a recon mid-size) now we are talking

Ordered one and got it in the mail yesterday. I'm really happy with it so far. I agree with you on if CS made it into a mid-size Recon 1 - but maybe with a 3-1/3" blade. Depending on how you measure the Double Safe Hunter, it's just slightly over 3-1/2". Depending on if you were questioned about it, the length of the DSH could be technically considered illegal for carry in some places.

8CrMoV is very close in composition to AUS8. I suspect you could use the same heat treat protocol and get reasonably similar results.
I think Cold Steel does a very good job with AUS8, so I would expect good properties in their 8CrMoV

Is it just my knife or is there no stop pin or other means and the blade tip just slams into the handle when closing?
P.S I have the slock master model.
