I was shopping at walmart today and I saw a dremel 200 kit that caught my eye. I was looking for some tools to work on making scales for some of my folders and doing a melt job on my 810 contego. Question is, is it worth it? Do you get your money's worth and does it perform up to expectations?

IIRC the 200 kit is the cheapest model. It offers the benefits of a quality rotary tool at a great price. For scale work, the single speed dremel is fine. If you want to do other stuff with it in the future, I'd suggest the variable speed model if you can stomach the additional cost.

the 200 was the middle price one. Two speed, came with two cutting bits, and a bunch of polishing/sanding bits as well. I think 11 or 12 tools total

At $50, you will definitely get your money's worth out of a two speed dremel

I have that same Dremel, got it at a pawn shop for $20 and works great! I'd look around at some pawn shops for some good deals on maybe even some nicer Dremels

I'd spend a bit more and opt for a variable speed model.
I'm still using the Dremel I bought in '74...1974 that is...It still works perfectly and I've used it mainly for drilling, sanding and shaping ivory and whale teeth up to and including grinding off the "insurance tabs" on the tips of bicycle forks.
Best tool I've ever owned.

You could also use that Dremel with a separate Speed Control, which worked very well for me. You do want some slower speeds available; otherwise it will drive you nuts with the noise.
