Hi all, I am just getting started with knife making. I have yet to make a knife and I am in the gathering equipment and supplies phase. I am limited on workspace/budget and I do not have a drill press. I do however, have a dremel tool and stumbled upon an attachment which turns a dremel tool into a drill press. I am not looking for perfection, I am just looking for something that will drill through metal and create fairly accurate holes.

The attachment is located at:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00068P48O/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Questions:

Has anyone used this attachment and is it any good?

Is this an OK approach or am I just wasting money?

Will the dremel have enough power to drill through most common steel alloys like stainless 400c or 01 tool steel?

Any advice is appreciated,

Thanks for all the feedback. I will ditch the dremel idea and looking around at amazon, I have found a few options. Would the cheap Wen work, should I spring for a more expensive one, or any other recommendations?

I was able to find the same Skil drill press at Lowes and purchased that one.

Thanks for all of the advice,

Patrice said it. I have one of those. Neither the dremel or the holder will handle knife drilling jobs. Frank

I use a Ryobi similar to a Dremel and I think the biggest problems are speed and torque. In general, slower speeds are better for metal. Get a new cheap drill press or a used one of better quality.

Thanks in advance,

I bought the workstation from the orange big box hardware store. Not one of were "plumb vertical". None of the stations could hold the dremel in an exactly vertical orientation.
So I returned the last one and gave up. Trash IMO.

The little Dremel workstations suck for most stuff, but are great for drilling tiny holes through soft stuff though. In stacked thicker leather I drill holes instead of piercing (yeah yeah, I know...) and the workstation makes quick work of it.

GASP!!! HAHAHAHA

Anyway, harbor freight five speed presses are serviceable. I had to replace my chuck twice already, so the second time I replaced it with a Rohm, which is so much better. It drilled 1/4" holes the entire depth of travel through unhardened A2 just fine with a good bit and proper technique. 28 in all if I remember right. I want a bigger press that is more accurate for folder building, but this one works for now. Especially for under $100.

I would go for the higher price, two reasons, more HP, 1/2 vs 1/3 and a crank on the height. You will keep this longer and get more use than the less expensive.
