Is the polishing compound that comes with a dremel tool okay to put on a leather strop? If it is okay and does work how do I load the strop with the compound? Thanks for the help.

Use the smooth side. Red jeweler's rough is iron oxide, and a bit too soft for most knife steels. Chromium oxide, cubic boron nitride, or diamond paste/spray will serve you far better.

Assuming the Dremel compound is the red stuff (rouge/iron oxide), I'd agree with Ben's comment. Some simple steels, like carbon/1095 in particular, might get some benefit from it, if the edge is truly ready for stropping. Otherwise, if the steels are very hard or have significant amounts of carbides (like many modern stainless steels), it'll probably be ineffective.

If you still want to try the Dremel compound for stropping, you might do so on a different backing, maybe some type of scrap material (wood, paper, or just leather scraps). I'd think you might be disappointed if you put it on your 'good' strop, though. Save that one for the green compound or diamond, cbn, etc.

Also agree on using the smooth side of the leather.

I had good luck with Infi, M4 and 154cm on Dremel's rouge. It doesn't seem to have the same effect on my Spyderco's S30V or CTS-XHP
