I asked this over in the Becker Forum but wanted to see what the ESEE folks have to say about this.

Being newer to the knife community...I've got a question for the experts.

What are the pros and cons of the drop points and Tantos?

For those that prefer one or the other...why?

Thanks

I've never found a reason for a tanto. Common theory is that it has improved tip strength but that secondary grind has nothing to do with tip strength at all and just gets itself in the way.

That said, I've never found a tanto lacking in almost anything except for processing game. In reality, it's just a blade with an extra point.

Not sure what you are looking at doing bro. But the bulk of my experience is with drop points and tantos. I used a Ka-Bar MULE with a tanto blade for several years. Beast of a knife, hard to beat. But the fact is the tanto profile is cool. That's about it. I mean you can do all manner of varied stuff with it, but a drop point just works better for most everything (except stabbing, but seriously, how often do you REALLY need to stab something.) Drop points sharpen easier and just are a plain old functional blade shape IMHO.

God bless,
Adam

The question was mostly out of curiosity behind the theory of a Tanto. I got a great deal on a Kershaw Tanto blur and have used it as my EDC.

Lately I've been cutting quite a bit of paracord and found that between the end of the serrations and the first tip of the tanto, there's not a lot of blade distance to cut the cord.

I'm thinking of changing my EDC due to this issue.

I have a tanto folder, little guy I've carried around for a decade or so, works great but sharpening is a little awkward.

Some like the clip point for use with their fire rods to preserve their blade.

Out of these, i like drop point the best.
Drop point seems to be able to do everything well without really being bad at something.
Tantos apparently have a stronger tip because of the 2nd grind starting higher up. I don't really like tantos that much because it kind of scares people. Clip points have so many different variants but i guess it can stab better. Finer tip

Tanto is super cool looking, I have always preferred a drop point, and never really cared much for clip points. To me it seems a drop point is the most practical for all around use, sharpening, etc....

Drop points are better for field dressing and processing white tail deer. Tanto blades are better for sticking into the side of buildings so you can stand on them and peek into windows prior to serving warrants...
