Ok, I'm sure theres been posts like this before. But I didn't think it was possible that another Survival show could make Man vs. Wild look good (well, better).

I happened to tune in to Dual Survival. What a freakin joke! I know, its not real. I know its supposed to be "entertainment". I fail to understand how a show like that could possibly even make it to another season.

A jackass that hikes around the forest barefoot since 1985???

Cody Lundin is legendary for that. He must have incredibly tough feet, but my understanding is that he's been barefoot for almost his entire life. He lives in Arizona, which means he walks around barefoot in the desert all the time. Since the desert beats the hell out of my hiking boots, I can't imagine how tough his feet must be.

Hey, each to his own.

I don't watch the show, by the way. But then again, I'm trying to give up my TV habit entirely.

I agree that the barefoot thing is a little weird, but I wouldn't call Cody Lundin a jackass. The guy has been around for quite a while and seems pretty knowledgable.

The show obviously has some issues, but it's entertainment. I still love watching the Simpsons too.

And I'm not into the whole guru worship thing, but I have talked to Cody on the phone and through email (This was many years ago before he started writing and all) and he was a very cool, down to earth guy. He doesn't blow his own horn about the things he's done, which to me is the mark of a humble professional. I would love to attend one of his courses, I'm sure I could learn quite a bit. But yeah, I'll keep my boots on.

Actually being barefoot in the wild isn't as bad as you may think. It's not usually verry painful unless your walking on rocks or sharp plants. It is worse in the dessert because of the all the hot sand and lack of wet ground.

I can't stand man vs. wild. i don't mind watching dual survival when they aren't doing something stupid like intentionally cutting themselves. I think Cody is very knowledgeable and doesn't seem to be cocky at all. The barefoot thing isn't for me but whatever.

Very well said from someone that has TALKED to the man.

I don't watch the show, and I will NEVER head out without boots. None the less, I have read his book 98.6 degrees and found it useful, and well written. No shoes....... for me it would be STUPID...... but thats me. ;)

I'd say that most of humans, in our existence, have gone barefoot their entire lives. I'm sure many people still do. How can you knock a guy for making a personal choice that doesn't affect you?
That's part of the reason he's on the show, don't you think? How many other guys did the DC interview that go barefoot? I don't think Cody is even trying to sell the idea to others, it's just what he does.
Every TV producer thinks that "Survivor Man" was not great TV, so they have gone the extra mile to make these survival shows more sensational. If it means making an Odd Couple bicker in the woods over barefeet, then so be it. Blood, tears, near death experiences, all bring in ratings, at least in the producers mind.

I don't think it is near MvW level. Dave was likely contacted by Discovery to do what he did, and other than that part, the show wasn't bad at all. Especially the Wikiup that Cody had made. As far as the barefeet issue, I don't see anything wrong with it, he has been doing it for 20 (?)+ years now. If it works for him, then great. Doesn't mean I will be going barefoot, but everyone of us is different.

Despite their shortcomings, almost everything on the Discovery, History and Travel channels is better than almost everything on the old "big 3" networks. Glee? Two and a Half Men? The View? Please. I'll take a barefoot hippie and a gung-ho outdoorsman any time.

I really enjoyed one episode of Man vs. Wild and wish they'd do more of them: The "Urban Survival" episode. It was kind of like watching an action movie with bits and pieces of info thrown in. It was, by far, the best MvW they've done, IMHO.
For the most part, I've even enjoyed the Dual Survival shows I've watched, with the exception of a few gripes and complaints -- but hey...all of the people some of the time, right?

man vs. wild is a joke in my opinion. dual survival is actually decent. i really do miss survivor man though that was a great show.

The tribes in the area you live in walked around barefoot with the exception of winter when they wore fur lined moccasins. It may be stupid for someone who's feet aren't accustomed to walking barefoot but the idea itself is far from it. It's funny how people seem to think that humans evolved with shoes on their feet.

Cody Lundin not only teaches self reliance, but he actually lives it every day. I think this alone puts him in a different league than most survival experts, including his co-star. So he goes without boots? He's obviously proven that they can be done without (as they were for thousands of years) if the need ever arises.

The previews for next week show Cody wearing something while they're in knee deep snow but still in his shorts. Now that's dumb.

Book of Genesis:

"And God said: "Let there be Vibram!"
And there was Vibram and God was pleased.
And sometime on the Sixth day, between
making man and woman and everything else,
God said: "Let their be breathable materials
for comfortable outdoors footwear!" and there was,
and God saw that it was good."

Dude, it's right there in the Bible. Duh.

Cody's #1 priority is to regulate body temperature so as to avoid hypothermia. My guess is that if he is in shorts, he probably has a pretty sound reason to be in shorts (unless of course it's a directive of the producers in the name of ratings).
