Dumping metal dust/water?

I searched for info on this subject but couldn't find much of anything. Anyway I'm wondering- for those of you who have a bucket of water under your grinder for the sparks and dust, where do you dump both the water and the metal clumps at the bottom of the bucket? I used to dump it into a sewer, but where I live now there is no sewer system, just septic tanks. I don't have any type of drain filter that would be suitable in the house or anything. I'm thinking the only option is to dump the water outside somewhere that isn't in use/near plants, etc. and maybe empty the metal clumps in the bottom into a garbage bag? I really have no clue here. Any ideas?

I place a strong magnet under the bucket and drop a small piece of steel in the water so the magnet will stay attached to the bottom. All the steel material will stick to the steel in the bottom of the bucket. Then I pour the water out of the bucket and let it dry out. Pull the magnet off the bottom and dump all the steel into your recycle container. Take it to the scap metal dude, collect a few $$ and buy a hamburger.

I pour mine on my yard the grass loves the extra iron.Really makes it green in front of the shop.

You can simply let it evaporate and put it in the trash.

I dump stuff like that in my woods.

I just drink off the water until I have to start chewing it, then I leave the sludgy stuff outside in the sun until it's dry, then I sell it to really pathetic people that are too cheap to buy good toupees.

Blaze belts have a wonderful sumptuous mouthfeel with sweet blueberry notes, melding so harmoniously with the classic riot of blackberry and black currant flavors, while Trizacts are all about balance and proportion. The sediment they leave gushes with layers of sweetness from hot to cold. Complex flavors of honey, rich, black Assam tea, malt, stone fruits and a touch of roses and soft lavender are finely woven together.

Or you can just dump it outside or throw it in the garbage. Your call.

I throw it in the garbage with all my tin cans, glass jars and plastic shopping bags.

I don't recommend dumping metal filings down any public drain/sewer system. if there's ever a reason for them to be down in the sewer they will be able to trace the rust stains to your residence, not that there's anything in particular wrong with that but in the unlikely event that a strange blockage of iron filings comes up in your neighborhood... I doubt you could get away with telling them it's because your diet is high in iron.

You made me so hungry I'm getting up for some Sugar Pops. :D

Just keep a 55 gallon drum outside the shop for all steel scraps and the grinding sludge, when it is full do another untill your pickup will barely haul them then take them to the local scrap metal yard and sell it then go buy some new steel....

or you could just keep all the sludge that the magnet sticks to and dry it out, then pack it into a canister and make a billet of Damascus out of it...lol

Matt, those trizacts pair nicely with pasta. Let me know if you want my Penne with borax alfredo recipe. It's delicious.

Man, I can derail a serious question in no time. I'm so sorry, Philadelph, but i really couldn't resist.

My serious answer is that I dump both the water and the contents outside in the woods behind my house, and bury it a bit in the forest floor. There's nothing in it to cause any harm, so don't sweat it too much.

mmm... sugar pops and borax alfredo...
