I was just wondering if you think it's worth while having a folding shovel in your pack ? If so what brand did you buy ?

Which pack? Certainly not one for backpacking.

I carry a short shovel in my vehicle, but would never consider one to carry for very far. I'd simply carve/whittle a digging implement and call it "bush craft practice"!

Agreed. Bug out, EDC bag or camping/hunting....don't need an entrenching tool. Use your blade to carve one if you need it.

A folding shovel is always in my vehicle, for camp or emergency. You know the Canadian penchant for traction bars, shovels and hitch-mounted winches :D Not so much for back packing, though, not earlier in life and certainly not now.

Carrying one in a pack would definitely be a personal choice. I have a military issue E-tool in my truck and Jeep and have used them on several occasions. I was skeptical of the strength of the folding design but have yet to have an issue with one.

Walther makes a small folding stainless steel shovel with a knife in the handle and a survival kit in the case.

I carry a plastic trowel for the toilet, but it will work fine of other digging

I would pack whatever made sense for my climate and geography, at a specific time of the year. This seems to be an individual call. I tend not to think much about a shovel because my car is usually within walking distance of wherever I am, and I always have an extremely robust shovel in the trunk, for metal detecting. But I can see it making sense to pack some type of light shovel in a deep snow location for possible shelter building, etc. I'd let my environment help me to make the decision. Do whatever makes sense to you my friend.

Shovel stays in the truck unless it's winter camping then I carry a lightweight snow shovel. If I am backpacking, a pointed stick will do the digging.

I've learned to become a minimalist regarding my pack and what I carry in it. I simply carry a hand gardening trowel. This one is available across the net for between $1 USD and $2.50USD. Fiskars Nyglass weighing less than an ounce.

I have a folding stainless steel trowel that I keep in my daypack for toilet duties and digging.

When I was in the military 45 years ago, I carried one all the time on the outside of my pack and used it a lot.

Now, I use a e-tool when I go canoe camping for campfire pit building and arranging coals for cooking.

It can be formidable weapon if you are not allowed to carry firearms where you camp.

Winter long distance snow shoeing in the New York and Vermont

Snow Shovel by MSR attached to my ice axe
Very useful for snow trenches in deep snow
Trenches were much faster than snow caves

E-tool is the perfect trunk tool. Its dug my puddlejumper out several times in the winter.
For backpacking, I'd con someone into carrying it. They're heavy buggers for how little you'll end up actually using it.

Love my Ames E-Tool for car camping. Indestructible, brutish, handsome and very handy. But heavy as all get out. A friend bought the Glock E-tool and it is a full pound lighter but lacks a triangle handle. Seems tough enough but may turn in hand. Would carry neither on a solo trip but maybe share the load if a group of us was going.

I carry one of these guys..

I was a maintenance and landscape gardener for 10yrs and had one of these for most of that time (the same one too). I took a file to the side of it and gave it a reasonable edge which made it a handy secondary cutting device. It's light, very robust and compact.

I ditched my D handled folding shovel for one of these which has cleared up webbing space on my pack for more important things like another water bottle..

I'm getting a gerber e tool with pick , and a schrade SCHSH1 to play with . I know schrade is not that great but should be a fun toy anyway
