I just got an E2D Executive Defender through a trade. It did not come with batteries, so I looked up the batteries online. It says 123A Lithium. I go down to the local radio shack and ding-dong at the counter tells me that CR123 is the exact batterie.

I buy them ($19 for two), go home and they are way to fat to fit down in the light.

What gives? Are 123A and CR123A batteries different? How do I get the one that fits the light without ordering online?

Any ideas on who would sell them?

That is strange. RadioShack batteries must be out of spec for size as well as over-priced. Bring them back.

I usually use Surefire brand batteries - a dozen for $27 or less. Most Surefire retailers and some LOWES (or is it HOME DEPOT?) have them. I also use Energizer and Sanyo brands - stick with name brand batteries for lithium batteries as there have been out-gasing explosion issues.

The 123A batteries are often found in the electronic - photo sections of stores.

Note that Surefire does make its battery tubes tighter than many other companies to prevent use of rechargeable batteries in their products.

That's good to know, thanks very much for the info. I am going to be heading over the Shack today to return them. I was thinking about ordering some batteries from SF, but I don't need a dozen of them :)

I'll report back once I find the right size.

I get some 123's from these guys. They work well. Be very careful not to mix and match lithium cells, though. They can be dangerous if one cell's voltage is higher than the other's. The one cell tries to "charge" the other one and the result is rapid venting, aka exploding.

CR123A lithium batteries have a good shelf life, usually 10 years, so worth keeping some around for emergencies.

Trust me when I say you WILL need a dozen. I have a U2 Digital Ultra and the multiple modes squeeze out battery life, but when you find yourself needing light, nothing is better than a lot of spares.

WOW - I had no idea they lasted that long. I'll buy them online next time. I took the batteries back to Radioshack and got some duracell's at Happy Harry's.

I am willing to admit how much of an idiot I am.....

I tried to put the batteries in the back and they did not fit so I figured they did not fit.

Come to find out the batteries go in the front.....

Even my wife laughed at me.

Funny thing is, I have two other SFs that I've never had an idiot moment with.

Thanks for your help fellas, now I know where I can get some cheap.

Before you order from Botach search for customer complaints. You'll get thousands of hits. :thumbdn:

I was gonna suggest that, but I see you got it straightened out. :D

If it helps, I did the same thing...

I use the Surefire batteries in all of mine. I've only heard of 1 or 2 places selling 123's for less money that aren't lacking in quality. With some research and some help from the candlepowerforums guys, you might be able to save a couple bucks, though.

To me, it's just easier to call up SF and order a couple dozen than to deal with possibly getting crap batteries or getting ripped off by some goofball seller. As with everything, YMMV. :D

I had a similar experience today at Home Depot. I actually opened like 4 different packs of batteries to be sure. None of them fit! They said they would. I left Home Depot pissed and did more research online. I feel totally stupid now but the batteries actually load from the front not the back! Oh well, live and learn.

Should take CR123. Last I bought I found on Ebay at a great deal. 24 Energizer for 22.95 shipped.
