Who were the most notable makers of the last century's early years, 1940s-1970s time frame? particularly those from Texas.

Wow, thanks! a lot of familiar names in that group. Texas must have been an important area in the development of custom knives..?

Bob Merz started making knives in the early 70's and is still making incredibile knives to this day. One of his knives is on the cover of a knifemaking supply company.
 
Don't forget Ruffin Johnson. The early Texas knives have a style that your eye can pick up instantly. Vey heavy and curvy, lots of trailing points.

You also might want to add Bob Hajovsky. He started a little later, early seventies, but made some really nice knives.
