Hey all I thought I would share the latest of my readings--Okay let me start by saying if anyone has done this you are trully hardcore...:barf:

I read that eating deer pellets is actually okay in a life or death survival situation. Backdrop--the article gave the example that if you are starving and in a place where there is say cranberries or some sort of wildberries and you mix them with deer pellets it is okay to consume. I won't go into all the details of the article but the deer pellets have to be dried, old and ashy you know kinda of white-ish. Also check if there are any worms and no smell which it should not have. That type of pellet is acceptable to mix as a filler with the berries. It also says stay away from pellets in shady areas or moist ground. The author of the article says it is like eating bran:(

I'm not pimping any literature (and it is not my intend to offend the higher powers that be) but I would have taken it with more of a grain of salt had it been in some other magazine. The magazine is The Wilderness Way. I thought that this was plain out wrong--what say all of you?

In the spirit of sharing knowledge and survival related themes I thought I would put this out there for you all to chew on:D

Bikermikearchery wins the thread! I don't believe humans were meant to be coprophageous, so I'd probably sooner eat worms than deer poo.

I once played a practical joke eating deer poop, however the deer poop was actually raisenets that I had preplaced, it was a pretty good joke though.

I would truly have to be on my last legs to consider eating the real thing. Chris

Just a hunch here but FWIW:
In a weakened state of survival, this would be a textbook method to contract
a fatal case of E-coli ...

Maybe some poor lost hiker got so hungry and delirious they thought the deer droppings actually were raisinets?

My friend tried to play the raisenet joke on me.
I knew it was coming & had my own handfull of raisenets ready.
He about fainted when I popped them in my mouth.

As a continuation... The berries that you see in bear scat could look very tempting. Would anyone be willing to try it?

Also, I have a book called Handbook of Indian Food and Fibers of Arid America and in it was an article on Cattails. It seems one of the indigenous peoples used to collect the undigested seeds after they passed through the human body. They would then dry, grind and cook them up for honoured guests.
I can almost hear them snickering in the distance... :)

Find the deer that made the poop. And if I had berries to mix with it, why in the world would I want to eat the poop?

[Dale makes a reminder to get that wild edibles book.....]

If you look at the ground and most poop is full of berries look up and find the berry bush. If you can't find it follow the tracks the other way and they will show you the way to them.
