I admittedly don’t know much about axes, hatchets, etc.

Here is my question-
What axe or hatchet do you EDC (or frequently carry) in your truck?
I’m a lifelong hunter and during hunting season I’m on the road a lot and sometimes camp for several days at a time. I’m wanting to buy a high quality axe and/or hatchet to keep in the truck. I’ve been eying the Winkler line because I own several of their knives and I’m a big fan. I know I don’t need a 500 dollar axe/hatchet but I want a quality tool that I can pass down into the family and in the mean time use the hell out of it.

Just curious what you knowledgeable folks would recommend?

I have recently been bitten by the “fine” knife bug and figure I would add a high quality axe/hatchet to the mix.

thanks in advance for any suggestions.

^^^Great suggestions for the man who knows axes better than anyone.

The best axe made that fits your truck axe/camping axe needs is Council's Velvicut Bad Axe Boy's Axe.

The great old rafting axes with hardened polls aren't made any more but can still be found on ebay. There are a great many vintage axes still out there which in general are better than most new axes and surely better than the boutique axes coming from Europe. If you know what to look for in a used axe there are some great ones out there. But there are also a lot od worn out POS's.

A standard Council full size axe like a 4 pound Dayton or a 3-1/2 pound Jersey is also a good place to start. Not as good as a boys axe in camp but a much better splitter.

A vintage American boys axe sounds like just what you need.
You won't find better made today, maybe something about as good but there are things you just don't get in an axe today.
I got this True Temper woodslasher on eBay last summer for around $50 shipped I believe, but something more used can be had less.

Now this is a 4lb double and not a boys axe, but this is what a " fine axe " looks like of you ask me.

Vintage axes are heirloom quality , and you can get more axe for less money than in an axe today.

That boys axe looks about perfect for my needs. It will fit under the back seats of my truck ready to be used at anytime. I definitely like the vintage stuff from what I’ve seen. Don’t get me wrong there are some great looking modern axes/hatchets and I’ll probably get one eventually but I’m leaning towards something just like in your first pic.
Thank you gents!

It's a true temper woodslasher, which often came with just a sticker and no stamp ( sometimes a letter and two numbers like C26...ect )
The way to identify them is the red paint ( if any is left ) and the little ridges running through the eye like this.

There's a nice barely used true temper woodsman boys axe head available right now for a reasonable price if you go on there and do a quick search.
$40 or best offer isn't bad for a head in it's condition.
Hang it on the best link boys axe handle your local hardware has and you'll have one fine axe.

I carry my omnivore bladeworks eta in my truck. Jared is a stand up guy and I dont think you can beat the performance for the dollar. (The sheath is a work of art in itself). I got the one with the sharpened hook and mohawk, but with the underhook edge ungrounded so it can be used for splitting, batonning, used as a froe, etc. https://i1079.photobucket.com/albums/w513/buckmaster96/Mobile Uploads/IMG_20191023_104712314.jpg

Edit: since photobucket sucks now, who do you use for posting photos instead of links?
