Watch gurus,
I know that many years ago, Elgin watches were supposed to be good as far as quality is concerned. Are they still? I just traded for a ti wrist watch and I really enjoy it but I wonder how the quality is in the sceme of things.
Thanks,
MAtt

Matt,
I'm afraid I can't help you myself, but until such time as one of our watch experts can address your question directly, you might want to try posting on the Military Watch Resource forum. Insofar as Elgin once supplied watches to our military forces, it's likely that someone there will be able to give a full rundown.

Hiya,

Elgin Watch company quit making watches in the 1960's. They never made the best watches, nor the worst. they occupied the mid-market and quite a few were made by Elgin for the military.

Some of the pocketwatches were quite decent. Their A-11 military hack watches are legendary, albeit a bit small by todays standards.

Best Regards,

Bob

There you have it, Matt; and from a man who definitely knows of what he speaks in these matters. :)

As fate would have it, just this week a jewelry catalog arrived in the mail which was selling, among numerous other things, women's Elgin watches. This peaked my curiosity and I was able to dig up a bit more info which you might find interesting. Elgin National Industries, Inc. is now a holding company for numerous other manufacturing related corporations. They apparently still own the rights to the Elgin brand as it applies to watches and clocks, although, as Bob has confirmed, it doesn't appear that they actually manufacter any timepieces at present. Rather, they have licensed the use of their brand to the M.Z. Burger Co., Inc. for distribution in North America. FWIW, the watches I saw in this catalog were very inexpensive and featured Japanese quartz movements. So, though you may yet see new watches bearing the Elgin name, they really share no heritage with the Elgins of the past.
