I have an Emerson Patriot with a black finish. I've been lusting for an OBS knife for a long time, but the price has kept me away (membership plus the price of the knife). For those that have both knives, would I been gaining anything by purchasing the OBS knife compared to the Patriot?

I'm new to Emerson knives, but I've been collecting high end custom knives for 40 years. I could not find the specs on the OBS Patriot, but I can only assume they are the same as the standard Patriot. You get some really nice looking graphics on the blade of the OBS Patriot, and for this reason, would consider it a collector and not a user, though you could use it if you so choose. That's just my take. You long time Emerson guys please correct me if I'm wrong.

The OBS folder is not a variant of any other model such as the Patriot or commander. It is its own model. If you look closely at the blade, you will notice that it is recurved, but has a small swedge near the tip setting it apart from other Emerson recurves(commander, Patriot, Vindicator, etc) It is also a different blade altogether, although similar to others. It is its own knife and meant to be that way. It is meant to be a symbol of one's beliefs in the codes of the order and a challenge coin of a way of life and thinking. It is not meant to be a collector piece, but a carried tool that happens to show off your interests and morals by promoting the order and to be absolutely used.

I am one of those people who go out of the way to live frugally. I find many in the younger generation who say this, or that is too pricey. Spend huge amount of money on things I tend to skim on.

My daily coffee I make at home, or stop by my bank that is a block from the house to get a free cup. Never ever do Starbucks, or as my buddy call the place FourBucks. My wardrobe is all generic and if Wal-mart don't sell it, I don't wear it. I am big on coupons, sales, or last year models.

Most of what I buy I try to shop on line looking for a great deal & price.

I spend money on bicycle parts as I love cycling, but my bike is 23 years old with 8 speed, note the latest model with 11 speed electronic shifting. I keep old ride able going down the road with new “old stock” parts I look for on e-bay. Just bought a new old stock 14 model Helmet that was 25% of retail when it was current years model. Cycling clothing is from Performance or Nashbar and is their generic line.

Thing like knives, handguns, cars or big items I buy quality, but look for deals, and they are out their if you do not get caught up on impulse buying.

Every once in a while Emerson runs a 10-15% Off sale, subscribe to their mailings. You will get those deal notices.

If I get a craving for a bite to eat on the road, I hit a Del Taco, get food on a budget. I do not have the latest cell phone, computer, or Ipad. The older models still work.

If you really want to join the OBS, and get a OBS Knife start saving everyday on what you spend on and very soon you will have the money saved I am sure. I am sure of that as you will be saving with a goal.
