About a month ago, I was in an Enterprise Rental Car for about ten days while mine was in the shop. Yesterday, a mysterious charge for $129.91 appeared against my debit card from Enterprise Car Rental. When I called them to ask about it, they told me it was for "Windshield Washer Fluid." While admitting that the charge seems unusual, they have refused to reverse it.

So, if you'll be renting a car soon, perhaps in Atlanta for Bladeshow, I suggest that you agree ahead of time on how much windshield washer fluid must be in the tank when you return it... or just avoid Enterprise Car Rental altogether.

That is Crazy, I wonder if they have gotten around to checking the tires, AIR is getting pretty high these days. Sorry for your predicament, wonder how the other rental companies do it.

Don't give them ideas!

that is insane...can you file a claim with your debit card?

I certainly have, but the bank says it'll take upto three months. However, when the bank does reverse the charge, Enterprise will be charged 18% for the reversal and, if the bank determines that the charge is unauthorized, then Enterprise will also be fined $45.

I've spoken to three different people at Enterprise and none would reverse the charge.

It's all very annoying.

Could they tell you where in the contract you agreed to this?

I can't believe that these representatives of Enterprise think a gallon of washer fluid merits such a fee. They don't charge that much if they have to fill the tank with gasoline. Last time (and it may be the last time) I rented from Enterprise, I was told there would be a $30 service charge for a photo radar ticket; or did I just over hear that?

My wife and I fly to Seattle/Tacoma this weekend. Thanks for the heads up. I will be asking at the counter and my wife will be looking at me like I am a quack. If I tell her I got the idea from BF, well, the for sure she will look at me like that. If they quote some outrageous fee, she will look at me like I am a genius.

What goes in that thing? Liquid gold? Over here washer fluid costs 6 euro's and you could fill the thing up at least 3 times with that much....unless you were driving a greenhouse.

There was an article on CNN a few days a ago about things like this. It seems that they are learning from the airlines and banks about adding little fees to boost profits. One that they listed was a outfit that was charging for tire wear (x$Xmiles driven). I hate scams like this, just tell me up from the price and I can decide to pay it or shop around (which of course is why they do it this way).

Judging by the people I've known who worked at car rental agencies, it would not surprise me if at least some of that money was lining someone's pocket. Paying that amount for $3.00 worth of windshield washer fluid is preposterous.

I agree, go up the chain of command until you reach someone at Enterprise who see's this charge as ridiculous. Of course involving your local Consumer News Advocate from your local TV station would be helpful. In NYC are we have 'Help Me Howard' on CH 11 for CT, NJ, NYC area. He gets the job done:thumbup:

One time I was down in Florida and had to rent from Enterprise; having just flown in from Hawaii. I got a car after giving them all my info and left thinking, 'That was easy'?! A few days later I return the car and the guy at the counter said, "we've been trying to contact you during the week to see how the rental was going, but got no answer?" Of course not Smendrick! You morons were ringing my damn phone off the hook in Hawaii pissing off my house guests at 0300hrs:grumpy::jerkit: That really pissed me off. I don't need anyone to hold my hand when I rent a car thank you.

Another rental with the same branch a few months later. This time I gave them my hotel number locally, and let them bug the front desk:D But after using the rental and heading up to the NE I realized I had left my 5 FAVORITE CDs in the damn car:eek: changer! I called them and they said they had them behind the counter, and would hold them for me until I came back down in a few weeks. Sure enough they were GONE when I went to get them.:grumpy::thumbdn:

Oh, and BOTH times there was NO friggin windshield wiper fluid in the damn tanks I had to buy a gallon and fill it myself...during 'lovebug season':barf:

Visa ruled on the matter today, already. The charge is unauthorized. The money has been refunded to me. And Enterprise will be penalized 18% and fined $45.
