I plan to do some slight modifications to a couple of kydex sheathes and holsters. It seems like alot of epoxies I look at say they can't be used on plastic. Just wanted to see what type of epoxy works best on kydex.

Thanks,
pojim

The only adhesive I've heard about for kydex is the solvent plumbers use for glueing PVC pipe together like that found in homes. Sorry no specific product name but I bet your local hardware store sells it.

Hi Pojim...

How or what exactly do you want to modify...

Reason I ask is there may be a better way to do it, than using glues or epoxy.

One type of glue I have had good sucess with is made by Locktite called "Plastix"

It's a Krazy glue type glue, but has to be used properly and carefully or it will Haze your good side...

The trick to using this glue is to rough the surface you want to adhere, clean it Very well with the supplied cleaning agent. Apply the glue and clamp it together tightly.

This glue adheres in a lack of oxygen. If you have gaps or air bubbles underneath it won't work well.

I've glued Concealex together and the next day tried peeling it apart and actually destroyed the Concealex before the bond broke.

This to me is Far superior to any type of PVC/ABS types glues.

When sanded it leaves absolutely no seam if clamped properly.

If you explain to me what you want to repair I'll try and help you with it...

Hope this helps..

ttyle Eric...

Thanks for the info.

I installed a set of adjustable Meps on my USP Tactical and the front sight is too tall for the sight channel in the kydex holster I use. I tried heating the channel and squeezing it with a wide set of pliers, and I made the channel too narrow. After trying to correct what I did, I decided the only thing I could do is cut down the top of the sight channel, fold the material straight up and attach a taller channel that I can make out of some scrap kydex I have lying around.

I first thought about riveting it, but corrosion resistance and the possibility of a snag have me leaning toward glue.

Another thing I'm interested in doing is attaching rare earth magnets to some slip sheathes that I have, a la Bud Nealy. I like slips better than "retention lip" shethes for their ease of concealability, but I think one would have to be crazy to carry that way without any form of retention. I thought I would either try gluing a flat magnet to the sheath or sandwiching a thin magnet in two thin pieces of kydex and gluing that to the sheath.

Some of my friends think these ideas are silly, and that I should just send my carry pieces to Piorek, but, with the right "engineering", it might work.

Thanks again,

Hi Pojim...

As far as the holsters go..
you are in for a world of work modifying that way.

As far as the Nealys are concerned,, if the sheath is made properly to begin with there is Absolutely No need for magnets or bells and whistles of Any kind..

You will get excellent retention without needing magnets,, and the sheaths Won't be Any bigger...

On the most part my sheaths are the smallest and sleekest on the market and can be made or used however which way you want..

If you are interested,, drop me a note and we can talk about some slip sheaths for your blades....
