This morning I got called by a friend saying his dad got him a RS6 ASK knife used, that it looks like the bear grylls knife from Robert Bayley, so I checked it out on my phone, being half away and a 3 hour time difference.

It does look like a BG knife, obviously not made by Robert Bayley, but the question is, he asked how I thought it compared to my Esee 3, or Hest. I honestly can't say anything about RS6 considering I've never owned any of their knives, but I told him Esee has held up to my abuse and use, and hasn't let me down, does anyone here have experience with RS6 in general? Or the ASK knife in question? He was wondering if its a knife he can use and rely on every day or if he should just sell it.

I said if you are that concerned with a useable fixie, I'll give you a knife, so a Esee 3 is on its way to him as soon as I get to ship it later today. He said thank you, and/but he still wants to know if the knife is any good, he loves the way it looks, which lol; imo is secondary to performance and durability hahahahaa. But he is enamored by Bear Grylls and the knife. I did my own digging and it appears there is a 7 year waiting list for Robert Bayley's knives. Imo if he really loves its look and design, and the knife from RS6 ends up being a bust/trash he should approach a custom knife maker to make him the knife. I saw a guy here in CA posting on yahoo answers I think I read earlier, had the same knife made for $150 I think? He said he didn't like the RS6 offering. But I honestly don't know.

Which brings me up to another and last point. If the RS6 is junk, anyone here recommend any blade maker who could make a clean version of this knife? Would Rowen? RS6 makes a knock, so assuming a knife maker could do the same?

After looking at the real deal, I must say a reproduction would look nice, but functional and reliable would be even better. Not sure he is grasping that, but said I would ask since I know some guys (meaning you here) who may have some answers, or who may be able to point in the right direction to have the knife made. So bam, here I am asking.

I myself cant compare the RS6 knife to an Esee 3, but 440 ? eh....and I dunno if RS6 even makes their knives, or if they out source to china or what not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, cause I myself, am stating to like the look of this knife, stick with my Esee's, but hey; if I could get a custom one made even for a decent penny, if he isn't willing to pony up for one, I'd like to go custom route myself lol.

But any info on his q's?

shiny = a no go for me.
I do know of a paddling friend who (over) paid (IMO) for a bear knife like this.

He bought it to "use hard"....but it doesn't have a scratch and he's afraid to use it as he spent too much for it.

Bet your dad will love the 3!

TTD I texted back and said this to him, cause I said I doubt anyone has anything to say about the ASK knife, but to early in day to say lol. And I said if you want a custom, you should ask if its ok with Rob, since there is a 7 year wait, I dont think it may be to out of the question.

And Solo, it isn't for me or my dad, a friends dad got him a RS6 knife thats a knock on Bayley's Raven/S4 series. Wanted to know if its any good, and how it stacked against my 3. I don't own a RS6 Ask, so I couldn't and cant compare, I am sending him a 3 to use and abuse, said do the comparison on your own.

But he still wants to keep the knife if its dependable, as he loves its cosmetic looks. And is a Bear Grylls fan. Trust me hes bent on this design. He's been yammering on text message to me for the past few hours, I wake up at 5am to run every morning. lol. I said get a esee 5, he said to thick. I said get a 4 or 6, more length. He said he loves the look of the Bayley knife. So whatever, I will see what I can dig up for him, its the least I can do. Just paying it forward.

EDIT:
Ok I had also asked my dads security guy what he thought, he actually has the Raven knife, slightly smaller than the site offering, as well an enlarged version, he said he wouldn't really use it for abusive use, or "hardcore survival" cause like mosthe said its far to expensive, he admits he bought for another purpose, he said straight up, its a beautiful more elegant knife, something he carried for a while on his persons, flowed better with his suit and dress shoes. Said though for something he can bang up and not have to worry about its price and cosmetic upkeep for collection value. He said he uses Esee, has for a while. Pfft. I am seeing a theme....

thanks for the correction, LS! sorry I missed on that.

hey, if anyone is bent on anything they should get it if it makes 'em happy. Bear's cool.
Most folks worry too much about what others think anyway.
If the design, style and materials "do it" for someone...they should do it!

The Condor Rodan's blade profile is very similar-it's an effective bushcraft/survival design. Also, Martin Knives makes the Bushcraft Tactical and T3 SERE, which have an almost identical blade and handle profile. Their price range is around 200 bucks but they are much more reputable and are made from quality high carbon steels. I'm facing the BT/T3 delema right now-do I go for the 3/16ths 1095, or the .2 inch 5160?

Payette, I sent him info, he googled, hes sold. I am laughing so hard right now man! This guy is so indecisive. But thanks everyone for the help, hes going with a MK knife!

Sweet-let me know which model he goes with and if he likes it-for the life of me I can't decide. I'll wind up getting both eventually, just tryin' to figure out the details. They are SEXY blades...
Either orange and brown BT like in the photos, or OD grooved micarta and a parked blade, I think.

also the martin bushcraft tactical is a very very similar design, on thier website they basically say its the same knife just made better. its not cheap either. around 300 bucks all done up but is a awesome blade. a couple folks in the ws&s forum have them and really like em alot.

this has serrations but you can get them w/o and pretty much any option you want. the sheaths are great not sure if i can post this mods please delete it if its a problem

He is going with the Sere, he bought a trainer knife from Cold Steel, he is going to cut down to size, he is taking some fighting classes this weekend and for the next few I think, one instructor he said is Israeli Military? And another is Philipino/Japanese man in his late 70s, both teaching?

I showed these knives to my dads security guy, he likes them too; seen them, just he got his knives from Bayley along time ago.

I myself am addicted to Esee. With my bike getting stolen and my ONLY busse in there (I bit the bullet while I was mia from here) I sold my D700 and all my glass, cause theres no work for photography :( on the fence about what point and shoot camera to get, but alot of people on my facebook and such felt my plight, one guy is giving me a spare busse (he apparently orders multiples of such) , its official. As soon as I can I am feeding my addiction. Swamp Rat, Busse, Martin, Reeves, and Emerson are on my knock it off the list, list. lol. I Have a 7 from Emerson but I really like the Jim they have. And my friend and my dads security guy both are swinging me to like the Martin Knives. lol. Gheez. I need to sell an organ or get a 3rd job so I can pay for my habit....I wonder if I can snort the Martin Knives ;):D

And thank you again for your help man! Do with Martin what I'm doing with Esee, buy one of everything, in every color, till you can't buy anything anymore. Its really bad :( but in these tough times, one should do stuff to make themselves happy here and there ;):thumbup:

GRUNT: I saw that, I was originally looking for info for a friend, but damn it, I guess I may be saving up for Martins now too lol :P

Martin makes the best of that genre for the price, in my opinion. I met him and we discussed all sorts of design and steel topics at Blade and I also got the chace to peruse his knife line for a few days. Great guy and a really good product. Eventually, i see myself having more than one of his knives.

Edited to add: I know a lot of people talk about how overpriced the Baily knives are and what a rippoff they are. Honestly, if I had the kind of disposable income required to purchase those, I would. I've gotten to handle a few in real life and they're pretty spectacular.

I'm on board too about Martin, loving the knives they make period. As for BK, no I know they are good knives, or my dads security guy wouldn't have bought them. I just dont have that kind of income to spend on MYSELF, lol. At least I don't think I NEED it, but just a want. I think its to much knife for me collector wise anyways, I like beating on my knives and seeing what kind of activities I can get into and out of with them :P

I lucked out-Got the GI Bill for school, which pays a living stipend, and cranked out about 500 hours of temporary work just before it started, plus just started getting VA medical benefits-backpaid for about two years. So now there's a fat check in my mailbox and it's time to work on my gear, maybe pay off a two week walkabout in Northern Idaho or in BC. But I've only budgeted one Martin, and I've spent HOURS trying to figure out which one I want. I emailed Ed Martin, didn't get anywhere... oh well. I'm sure I'll be happy with either one, it's just when you drop big bones on crap like that you want it to be perfect.

In time, you'll probably get both. I am really loving their knives. Same with Esee, you never know what you really are going to stumble on. I will save more, I think they have a 2-3 month wait for a knife atm I think?
