Has anybody used the leather sheaths available for the ESEE-4? And if so, how did you like it? I'm thinking of getting one when i get the knife. I like the look of leather sheaths.

I have not used it, but i dont think leather and 1095 goes to well together. The leather will get soaked and the knife will rust very easily.

A few hundred years of history shows that carbon steel blades and leather sheaths work just fine.

WWII Kabars didnt come with kydex.

Besides, some of the available leather sheaths for the ESEE knives are waterproofed, so this should be even less of an issue.

Well, obviously I'm not going to dunk the sheath and knife in a bucket of water and toss it in the closet to sit. If the sheath gets wet, the knife is coming out. And, of course, the sheath WILL dry.

Have you had any experience with the sheaths?

With the Sharpshooter sheaths I was referring to...no.

I have used leather sheaths from other makers (mainly Chuddy Bear, who is awesome) and they hold up great. There is just something about leather that classes things up a bit.

Welcome to BF. Nice to see other Iowans on here.

+1 on the class. I think leather looks better than kydex when it comes to style. Thats just my opinion.

lol I didn't even notice that you were also from this fine state until you said that.

While I've got you here: Do you know if there are any ESEE dealers in Iowa?

Paging Leatherman. He's a member here that makes some suh-weet leather sheaths. Molded leather for retention, no snaps, loops, straps or other nonsense.

I have a EEP treated Sharpshooter, ala KSF, for my ESEE 4. It's a very nice sheath. The treatment makes the leather more supple, and the black has discolored my linen micarta handle, and my pants. I don't care so much, but just a point. I have not gotten it wet, but I don't think it's an issue for anyone with common sense.
I have an Armorall leather for my ESEE 5, also a great sheath. It's a different type of construction from the SSS. I got that one from Two Wolves Outdoors. They are both somewhat new, and long term wear and tear are not something I can comment on.
I'm sure numerous leather guys here on one of the forums can make you one as well, just look around, and ask.
I like leather sheaths for my hip, and I like to attach the kydex to my pack somewhere. Multiple carry options that way.

I was afraid of the discoloration issue. Someone posted a picture of it somewhere on this forum. I am leaning towards a brown sheath so hopefully that wont be a problem. I guess the brown ones could bleed color as well, I suppose.

I have a sharpshooter sheath and I am very impressed with it the also have a pretty vast line of sheath accesories so you can set it up to how you like to carry

Can you be more specific please? is it the older style sheath? black or brown?

If it is the newer one, have you noticed any staining from it on your knife or clothes?

well you could get a martin swinkels custom sheath. leather, kydex, kydex lined leather, leather lined kydex etc. i have one for my ESEE3 and it is awesome!

Got the leather sheath for the 4. It is treated and have a drain port on bottom. It is brand new, but I'm liking it so far.

I'm pretty sure it's a newer version and the only staining I've had was a bit on my handle where the retention strap is
