ESEE Skull Logo Hype?

I have a question for the ESEE fans here. I saw a FS thread the other day where the seller referenced another forum where someone was offering 3x the normal going rate for ESEE knives with the old skull logo. Someone else pointed out that the poster went dark and it's not clear if anyone actually paid that. But then I saw this sold listing on ebay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/3147050612...T+5oN4ZBh65lnKUDhBOKNrrQib|tkp:Bk9SR7Lbgc_RYg

And it looks like a Junglas sold for over $300 shipped. I can't see anything unusual about it other than the skull logo, and the fact that it's pretty heavily used (but I don't think that would raise the value). And this knife had multiple bidders willing to push the price up that high. Is this really a thing now?

To some people it is. I'm not sure how wide spread it is now. I think after they first changed the logo some people didn't like the new logo and started trying to buy the old stock that kind of created a market for the skull logo knives, but I think it's dying down.

That makes sense, although this auction was from a couple months ago. The only other thing I can think of is that some people say there's demand for low serial numbers? This one was a little over 1000, though, so doesn't seem too low. Then again, I might be massively misjudging how many of these they make. My Junglas has a double digit serial, so I always assumed they were pretty niche.

Collectors will pay crazy money for virtually anything, and some people enjoy collecting knives which have features that may have changed on later iterations. An old logo tells others "I've been a fan of this brand since the old days", you know?

Remember, this hobby has very little to do with cutting things. If that was the main driver, we'd all own Opinels and SAKs, and there wouldn't be many other companies selling knives. We certainly wouldn't be spoiled for choice like we are today.

I saw the same sales post and thought "man, this fella's crazy".
You'd be surprised what is "valuable" to people for whom money isn't an object.
An emblem on a blade is worth nothing to me, but for someone else maybe that skull art is just tacticool enough to be worth it.

I don’t get the “skull” fascination with ESEE. I asked Jeff to make me one with a unicorn shooting a rainbow out its butt on the blade (to be a contrarian about it) but I am still waiting.

I sold my skull logo Junglass for around $120-$130 with sheath I think, not too long ago.
the serial number I had was Really low, considering how many were made.

Went to a good home.
I could care less what someone else would pay..... that's all they are worth. *to me.

1 of 200. Only cleaned two deer with it. Bidding starts at $1000.

If someone wants to spend $350.00 or $1000.00 if that makes ( it more specialer )on a Junglas with the skull logo ... just saying.🤔

I hadn't thought of it that way, but I think from now on I'll be using this low serial number to pull rank during forum arguments. Remember, peasants, I was in on this brand before all of you! Well not really, I just happened to get an early one when I bought it used, but that's the story I'm going with. The hipster inside of me is bursting with joy...

I'm an ESEE fan and enjoy collecting. The skull logo is something that makes a knife more appealing to me just because it's hard to find them for sale here in Australia, it's something a bit different. I guess like all collections the rarer pieces are the more interesting pieces
A new ESEE 5 here retails for $300-$400 I wouldn't pay more then that for a second hand one though.
