I am a fan of traditional axes and hatchets with ergonomic curved wooden handle, but metal one piece Estwing hatchet with leather handle and beautful proportions attracted my attention few years ago. Finnaly I bought it.
I don't like new, shiny things, so I added little patina right away, removed lacquer from the handle, oiled it and polished it with shoeshine and sharpened (I was dissapointed on factory sharpening) and polished the cutting edge. Later I made a new leather sheath – I didn't like the original one. My demands were: free poll (hammering with sheath on), safety (snap is very insecure and it can open when no need), possibility to carry hatchet on belt or on shoulder strap.

It was only one day between first and last picture – and I thouught I should show them to you.
Thank you for your time.

Nice one, the modified axe looks lot better to me!
How much are those?

Nice!

You did an excellent job on that sheath!

I have one of the smaller version of those hatchets ans well as a E44A. Might say I love those Estwings. The small hatchet (14A) fits real well in a back Jeans pocket.

Whoa. You did a good job on that, I really like the the dulled look of the overall finish. I have a Tosa that I'm waiting to build a patina, but half of it is covered with a forged finish, so I'm not sure what the total product will look like. I go out and chop as much as I can to get this process under way.

Can we see a close up of the bit? It looks like there is a darker patina between the bit and the cheek.

That sheath is awesome, too. That's the type of sheath I wanted to have made for my Tosa, but I'm still happy with how mine came out.

Very nice. The thought and attention to the sheath is apparent. I like the details on the sheath.

Estwing makes a great product. There was a recent post on here about the forging process that Estwing uses in axe making and it was impressive.

It is just a light reflection. The bite is polished.

I need to get me one of those, very nice looking piece...would definitely add that to my trucks kit!

Great job.....Looks much better when you got done !

Thanks! Now I have to go out to my truck and get mine to clean it up a bit. It has like 5 years worth of patina.:D
