Estwing Special Edition Camper's Axe - 16" Hatchet now
has black grip

There was another new model example of a camp, utility, survivalist similar...sold new with the heel already (worn) broken in for the user.

Is this an improvement or a cosmetic change for a "look"? Cedar or Hudson Bay like pattern?

I like Estwing, just not understanding the heel

Are you talking about Spyderco Genzow? The shape is heavily influenced by vintage Franciscas that were primarily throwing axes, which just makes it nothing more than gimmicky, expensive throwing tomahawk kind of thing.

I dont know...but that sounds nice.
I dont throw so i dont know.

Is this Estwing for throwing? Would you throw something 16" long? Intentionally throw as sport at this length and weight?

It is posted as a campers axe, so i thought they were going for that cedar or hudson bay look maybe...marketing as the motivator for the design perhaps?

Great! I would like to see chopping, splitting test comparing Genzow, CS Trail Hawk, properly sharpened 1 1/4lbs camp hatchet and 22oz half hatchet.

Ok! knock it out! Please put it on video on Youtube so the world can see it. My reply to you was the Genzow is not a gimmick, I don't care how it compares to the rest of those tools, If I am a betting man you never put one in your hand. I am not saying it is the king of all Tomahawk/hatchets but I repeat what I said that it is no gimmick. The Genzow is not a traditional tool so people on this forum are turned off by it, OK! to each his own, no issues. I am just saying it is no gimmick, I challenge you to buy one, use it and abuse it and film your thoughts through the entire process for the world to see. I am not trying to sell you on the tool, I just want you to see that it is no gimmick, first please read the Spyderco Website description of the Genzow before you start to have a base of your testing and evaluation. I don't need to be sold on the tool, I am already a fan.

Hi RickJ, thanks for posting up the Estwing. Personally I have a couple older Estwing hatchets, and one i used for camping, kindling work for years. Good tools.
No doubt the special edition 16" handle continues the Estwing tradition and you have positive experience with yours.
Does anything else matter, the comparison testing?...probably not. I dont think there was anything intentionally said, meant to offend you and I think i can safely say that we just love to compare todays tools to yesterdays tools to other yesterdays tools to more of todays...we can't help ourselves lol!

Keep chopping and swinging away

I like the idea of hatchet with hardened poll in camping environment. (I actually bought couple light drywall hammer heads to play with: one for belt hatchet, second for shepard's axe). Genzow's slender, curvy haft is actually pretty nice. What I question is steep angle of the edge: It looks like when used for chopping only upper 1/3 toward the toe actually impacts the wood. I hopped you could share you insight about shape of the blade.

Not at all, because of the handle design, as the blade falls it is actually falling on the center of the edge. This is why I tell people to put one in their hand and do a chopping motion with it. The Genzow actually had a lot of thought put into it.

Thank you for sharing your experience with that hatchet.

I hope you get your hands on one and can use it, mine came with perfect fit and finish and a razor sharp blade that cut paper and shaved my arm hair right out of the pouch. I say pouch because it comes in a big zippered pouch along with the sheath. My personal requirement for such a tool must be Utility first since work or recreation is what we do 99.9% of the time but could suffice as a last ditch defensive tool if needed.

This is literally the same Camper's Axe model that they've produced for decades. It's just with a black grip and applied finish. No other difference. Not sure what's confusing about it. And no, it's not meant for throwing.

Thanks for the heads up FortyTwo it was the heel design that sparked my initial post.
