on several day hikes last year i noticed my sawyer mini water filter kept leaking when i used it with my platypus water bladders. i didn't think much about it then and just kept cranking it down tight until it eventually just kept on leaking no matter how tight i screwed it on. i thought it was a defective filter so got rid of it and got another...fast forward to two weeks ago and i damaged one of my platypus 1 liter bladders so it was time to buy a replacement. i just happen to be researching evernew water bladders (i already have several of their titanium cook gear and by far my favorite over snow peak, etc.) and came upon this thread: http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php/102643-How-many-Evernew-Water-Carriers-should-I-get.

so it turns out that platypus' thread is different than sawyer and normal water/soda bottles...just different enough that it causes a leak in my case. i don't know the reasoning behind this different spec thread but i'm guessing it's just to nickle and dime people and you have to have a platypus brand replacement cap if you lose the original instead of reusing a soda bottle's cap

the evernew 900 ml is pretty close in overall dimensions to platypus' 1 liter so it fits the same in my pant's lower right pocket.

thread comparison...hard to see but in person the difference is immediate. another bonus is evernew's cap is captive...and orange :D anyway, just a head's up in case yours leaks too then you'll know why.

Great post and link!

I use Platypus Big Zip reservoirs as dirty water bags (I write "DIRTY" on them with a Sharpie.) and use the inline adapters to run hose from reservoir through Sawyer and then through a Platypus Gravityworks carbon cartridge (depending on where I am). I do this because the bigger reservoir opening is easier to fill with water at certain sources that are low and I like to be able to filter much water at a time.

My dad has the EverNew bags, they definitely seem nice. I use a Sawyer for dirty and Platypus for clean. I'll have to test the seal on mine, I put the Mini and a SmartWater sports cap on it and both seemed to thread fine but I've not used it with the Saywer filter. Thanks for the heads up.

thanks!

I almost bought a platypus for the sawyer last night.. glad I didn't now

platypus is much cheaper though so i'd say go ahead and buy some. they're still good for storing the clean water and just use an evernew strictly for the dirty water.

you're welcome! you may or may not get a leak...mine was okay for several trips but it gradually leaked.
