I think it’s a no-no for me to link to an unaffiliated site on here so I’ll avoid that for now until/unless I find out otherwise.
I just wanted to say, I received my SnaggleToothFM yesterday, and it is a game changer for me. I know there are quite a few CS fans here that prefer the thumbplate/pocket snag/wave opening feature over the traditional thumb stud design. I myself have a unique hand injury from when I was a youngster (I can’t bend my thumb, or move it side to side, I can only move it “up and down”) which makes thumbstuds and spyder hole type models difficult for me to use. I use folding knives almost every day, so when I found out about the pocket snag type options I was completely sold. I had tried several flipper type designs ,from different companies (noteably the crkt m-16) and liked the opening mechanism, but many of them use liner locks or frame locks, which were less convenient for me with my thumb issue. I never tried many of the Emerson wave models for the same reason.
I have always loved CS blades for their insanely strong locking mechanisms, and robust designs, so when I found out that they incorporated the pocket snag type of opening mechanism into some of their designs, it was a match made in heaven for me.
I carried and used a Rajah III for almost 3 years before i eventually switched to an AK-47 for the next 2 years with awesome performance results. I never had a serious issue with either knife but it always bugged me that the CS thumb plate/pocket snag design was somewhat limited and seemed to mostly favor the more tactical types of designs. Not in every case, but I longed for some of the other models like the voyager, and broken skull with a pocket snag type of option.
The voyager was always a perfect fit for me, but I never liked the zip tied variations I tried to use, mostly because of just how ugly they were but sometimes because they broke off due to the duress I put some of my folders through. I tried zip ties of different sizes, and zip tying different sizes hexnuts and other odds and ends but it never quite made the cut for me. I’m a sucker for aesthetics, but understood that I was pretty limited in my options because of my bum thumb.
Enter the SnaggleToothMF: Just a week or so ago I found out about this clever little product on this very forum. It has completely changed my perception of how I am able to open different models of folding knives and vastly expanded my range of options.
I have only been using it for a couple of days now but there aren’t enough great things I can say about it so far. It seems to be perfectly thought out, not too obtrusive but still snags better than my thumb plate models. Extremely smooth and reliable action so far. Finally, I can carry my voyager comfortably. I’ve been out of work for a little while now but I will probably order a broken skull or maybe a lawman when things pick up. Having the option of several different models to choose from now is just amazing to me. I have talked on this forum in the past about how I wish CS would offer something like this that would be compatible with their thumb stud models, and it was the STMF that delivered.
The material is very tough but light, I would love to have an aluminum or titanium version, and from my brief correspondence with Rob at the company (one of the nicest guys I’ve ever talked to), that might be something available in the future. That being said, I have “waved” this thing open at least a hundred times since I got it and I simply can’t imagine any issues arising. The nut it comes with makes an excellent thumb stud as well that still provides that option for people who like having both the pocket snag and thumb stud (like the standard model thumb plate from CS offers). If I didn’t have the issue with my thumb I could definitely use the nut just fine as a thumb stud, and I can actually use my index finger on the “tooth” itself.
I have to say though, I prefer the STMF over the CS thumb disc already, It has a 100% positive snag basically while the standard disc gives me about 80% or 90% depending on the pocket of the pants I’m wearing.
I honestly can’t explain what this simple little product has done for me, and I expect that anyone else with a minor disability like my own (that makes typical thumb stud designs difficult for them, arthritis, injury, etc.) will agree. If you’re a fan of pocket snagging your blade open, these guys have you covered. They offer a left handed version as well, which places the nut on the other side. The ability to open the knife arguably faster than any automatic has it’s obvious advantages for tactical users as well.
I plan to do a few follow up reviews periodically as I use and abuse this little guy over the next year, but I don’t foresee anything other than excellence coming from it. I believe it is made of delrin, which is an extremely tough material. It comes with a nice sized coupling type nut to hold it in place, which I mentioned doubled as a thumb stud, and I believe it is steel. It has held tight through my testing so far even without loctite.
This little guy will be a huge part of my knife life for the forseeable future. If you don’t have one, you are seriously missing out.
I recorded a video of how easy it is to install and the positive snag on my first try, and I will upload it to YouTube as soon as I transfer the video to my computer.
I will also be posting more pics all over bladeforum.
[EDIT] as mentioned below, the STMF is about 15$ each or 3 for 30$. I believe they offer savings on multiple orders too.
