Yes, the scales are dyed with Rit black... They etching is quite simple. Just apply some PCB etchant with a glass dropper to the areas that you want the effect (BEFORE you remove the blade coating), let sit for a bit and rinse off. If you want a deeper etch, you can reapply for a longer period of time.

Thanks man. I might try the etching. So you just place drops of the etchant right onto the logos and lettering with the factory finish still on the knife? Just wanted to make sure. Really appreciate the info.

i got a spyderco pm2 s110v today.. omg the blade grind is horrible.. i should have made the mailing address themselves and had them fix it before sending it to me, i would have paid the extra $5 ..
