Not too long ago my EDC was a very old Schrade model SCHST6C folder. It was one of those things I just carried in my pocket and never gave a second thought to. I can't even remember when my step father bought it for me but if I had to wager a guess I'd say it's at least 10 years old. I would pull it out to open packages, break down boxes, pry objects open, etc. The knife was used and abused. I wore quite a bit of the black coating off the blade, never sharpened it, never oiled it, and all of the torx had opened up on me making the blade play and scales rattle and wobble like no other.
One day I went to deploy the blade with a flick of the thumb and instead of it opening with a quick and gratifying click it just sort of fell apart. The blade's pivot was a male and female torx screw and nylon washer sandwich. The female half had completely backed out and was lost rendering the blade useless as any sort of pressure was liable to free the blade completely from the scales. It was this event that led me to discover this forum and after some research acquire a new EDC to replace my Schrade (Kershaw Piston).
As nice as my replacement EDC is I still have a soft spot in my heart (and pocket) for my old folder which has served me dutifully even though I've been a neglectful owner. I was fully aware of the fact that my knife was so ridiculously past any sort of manufacturer warranty at this point that there was very little chance they would have parts available and if they did I would be paying for them. I decided to give Schrade a call to see if there was any hope of sourcing replacement parts so I could repair it. I came to find out their product portfolio is owned by another company now (Taylor Brands LLC). I called the general info number listed on the site and was transferred to a lady who handles repairs/warranty issues (wish I could remember her name). I gave her the model number and she didn't even recognize it; my heart sank. I explained to her that my knife fell apart because of the pivot. She said, "Oh you just need a new pivot screw and washer set, hold on a sec". As luck would have it, she had the part on hand. "Give me your name and address and I will get this sent out to you in the mail tomorrow". No request for cash from my end, no hesitation, just sent me the parts.
They arrived and I was able to fix my old blade. With these forums and the knowledge therein I plan to take better care of my old EDC. I just wanted to take time out of my day to tell you all about the fantastic customer service I received from the lady handling parts and Taylor Brands. If this isnt the right sub forum for this type of post I apologize in advance.
