The topic pretty much says it all.
I had never heard of it before but the claims on their website are fantastic.
It's supposed to be good for all kinds of lube and most importantly it is non-toxic. I found it on a post over in rec.knives.

Check 'em out.

I can recommend it.
you can use it on everything and it won't damage it. I use it for long term storrage as it builds a white film and won't get hard over the time. I use it to clean and lubricate my knives. It is food safe and my wife doesn't like the smell.
You can also use it to solve rust.
You can use it on leather, but it darkens it and makes it soft. (if that's ok for you, I do not use it on leather-sheaths.)
what can I say more? here in europe it is not so expensive than the US products so this is a plus too.
As for the generations using it,(I know this sounds funny)my father used it and my grandfather used it. Both were avid hunters.
hope this helps.

I've used it for rust protection a long time. When it comes to knives rather for storage than for use (I believe in drying and oiling blades after use more than coatings which protect them during use). Works well.

I use ballistol, I recommend ballistol and I give away a small bottle with every knife I sell...
Ballistol is excellent for coating blade, for doing sheaths, it is non toxic altough I wouldn't drink it, it smells bad, you can even disinfect wounds with it.
It is not really oil, as it is watersolvable if you mix hard enough, but over time, the grease in it (or something similar) comes floating up.
It was originally made for weapons maintenance, but it got used a lot in car industry, for cleaning and coating glass, chrome and stainless steel pieces. It is also a powerfull cleaner of almost anything.
This stuff is really good stuff, even Jim Hirouslas loves it (I believe he became importer for the US after he fell in love with the stuff).
And, it's fairly cheap here in Europe (10 $ for 0.5 liter).

Thanks guys.
I am going to call around and see if I can find it locally.
I believe it will be better than the food grade silicon that I have been using.

I've used Ballistol on M60's, M16A2's, my duty weapon a CAR-15, M9 Beretta, Remington 700PSS, Ruger Vaqueros, 1866 Yellowboy, Stoeger sxs along with on all my knives and other items that need oil.

To me the true test was how it functioned on fully automatic weapons. After firing several hundered rounds in the M60, M16A2's and my CAR, it worked much better than the standard issue CLP and significantly reduced cleaning time.

As strange as it seems all of ballistols clames appear to be true and I've replaced all my other lubes in favor of the "green" smelling oil.

Sounds like what would happen if someone swallowed a ballisong.

Of course I could be mispronouncing it.

(sorry, that was pretty bad)

My parents even used it to lubricate the springs of my pram, which is some 30 years ago

. I use it mostly on my guns (S&W stainless 686, Glock 17 & Marlin 1894) but also on knives.
After 30 years of use in my family, I can still recommend it.
I have to add that for knives which will be used in very wet/sweaty conditions Tufcloth/glide is probably an even better option but for an all around lubricant/rust inhibitor Ballistol is the way to go !

I forgot to mention one thing.
It attracts dirt if you use it extensively. I mean like any oil it collects dust. When I use it as a lubricant on my folders I try to get rid of the excess oil to minimize this effect. I do not mind a little dust on my blade as it can be easily wiped off. (I'm a little paranoid about rust on myknives
