So, anyone had experience with cold steel voyager X2 series ? I'm thinking of getting one, but I'm a little sceptical with its lock. How tough is the lock ?

Is VG-1 steel close to VG-10 ? Never had any experiences with VG-1, never knew it existed either. Thanks in advance.

isnt the cs voyager that knife where the fat guy climbs a wall with?

must be a good lock then :D

I have had a few X2 6 inch plain edge voyager style knives..both with the metal pocket clips..avoid the old style with the plastic clip.

I like the knives ..they are worth the cash. IMO

Gabe Suarez really likes them also.

I have never had a problem with the lock. They are a LARGE knife but carry well.IMO

I have an XLg. Voyager and it's as strong as it needs to be. A lot of knife there...

Is there any reason to believe the backlocks on the Voyager series are not up to snuff?

From what I can remember, fatboy Thompson doesn't hang on any of his knives. He seems to reserve that demonstration for the <200lb young men capable of doing things like a pull-up.

The Back locks on the Voyagers should be fine. I'm not a fan of CS, but the Voyager X2 is one of my favorites from their line.

I've had a couple of 'em, and they are a pretty good knife, but be aware that when opened, they ARE bigger than you might think they'd be.

The Voyager X2 is an incredible knife. After a 4-inch blade, the extra inches on the blade increase the knife size substantually. Because of a rib injury, I can't conveniently carry the large Voyagers around the waist, but carry them in my pocket.

My favorite blade size is 5 inches, and I like the Gunsite I model the best. I wish the 6-inch Voyager came w/a partially serrated blade, as it offers enough edge space to use each effectively.

By holding it in the middle of the grip, you have even more extention, which is nice. You can even hand the thing to your biggest, badest friends and ask them to break it in half and they won't be able to. It is one strong knife. An all black model would be even better, but the polished silver blade is attractive and resiliant. As far as I know, no other knife maker makes a folder that size.

As far as VG-1 goes, it's whatever steel Lynn Thompson can get a good price on. He'll always claim it's a step up...a major improvement, but in this case VG-1 does seem to be a bit better than AUS8.

VG-1 has roughly the same Carbon to Chomium ratio as VG-10. VG-1 does not have as much of the more expensive ingredients that add to corrosion resistance and smaller grain size, but does have a dash of Nickel which may produce somewhat the same effect.

______________VG10___________VG1
Carbon_______
0.95-1.05_______0.95-1.05
Chromium___14.50-15.50_______13.0-15.0
Moly_________0.90-1.20_________0.2-0.4
Nickel__________ --- _________0.25 Max
Vanadium____0.10-0.30__________ --- ___
Cobalt_______1.30-1.50__________ --- ___

thombrogan says he has a couple of high end Japanese kitchen knives with VG-1 blades. He says the steel holds an edge well.

they are "ok" i dont like FRN handles myself but that doesnt change the fact that they are decent knives for the $$ and FRN works fine for handles, the steels decent too imho.

an old design though,

The only think I don't like are the clips, which have a tendancy toloosen and shift.

The VG-1 will undoubtedly have a bit better edge retention with plain blades, but with serrated I'm not sure what the difference would be. The greatest threat to a serrated blade is chipping the tiny teeth, so that's still a question mark as to which steel is best.

For a year I couldn't say what my preference was, an X2 Voyager or a Vaquero Grande. But after I had carried and used both, I think the Voyager offers a little more control in cutting. For self defense, the Vaquero may have the...uh...edge.

I've also had a couple of the Vaquaro Grande, and that really IS one wicked folder! The shape of the blade is designed to cut very deeply, and if you hold it near the "far end" of the handle, it's almost like holding a machete (as is the X2 Voyager).

Since I carry it in my pocket, I haven't gone the Locktight route. I have used it on some revolver sideplate screws that like to back out.

Hey, Eric, nice shoulder rig. Where did you get it? Did you make it or is it commercially available? If the latter, how much does it go for (ballpark)? Thanks for posting!

I used one with that steel and have two with MBS-26 which is practically (most likely) the same steel. I like it a whole lot.

LT may have switched to VG-1 for economic reasons, but he switched to a great steel nonetheless.

I'm pretty sure that's from Buy Brown:

I used to see pictures of the shoulder rig for the Spyderco E4 Wave (great rig for that) on his site, but I can't find them anymore.

Maybe it's from On/Scene Tactical? I hear their concealex/boltaron guy makes pretty much everything Normark wants.
