Extrema Ratio?

Hello all, I was curious to see if there are any current owners of Extrema Ratio knives here on the forums. If you own or have owned one (or more), would you recommend the brand? Are there any quirky features to take note of, that might dissuade someone from buying? How are the ergonomics? Reason being is that Blade HQ is running a markdown on the MPC and one of the Fulcrum fixed blades, and I'm in the mood to spend money on something relatively obscure. :D

Thanks,
Josh

This brand makes great knives. So far I've had the Pugio, Dark Talon, and the Bf M1A1. The Dark Talon came rediculously sharp. Beautiful mirror edge polished edge. The liner lock has gone all the way to the right, if I flick it hard. Doesn't matter one bit stil locks up like a vault, no play. The pugio is deadly sharp, sheath is abit retaded though. The M1A1 is the only one that I'm not completely happy with. Grind is uneven and obtuse, seems impossible to get really sharp. The linerlock on the bottle opener is all the way over to right again, again no play.

All in all they're built like tanks. I love them. The Talon and M1A1 both are in their light use folder range. I have seen their heavy folders and as if mine were not heavy duty enough these things easily rival Strider and such. It's nice to see such a strong design that isn't just two slabs and back spacers.

Thanks Lape! I was already wondering if I would have to bump the thread tomorrow :D
Once I sell off a few of the good knives I don't carry, I'll spring for the MPC. FYI, if you're in the market, BHQ has the MPC down to $450 and the Fulcrum C down to $225!

I usually buy from my local over priced knife store.

I think you will love it. Note that ontop of coming in different colours most of their knives come in either a smooth finish, or a finish that feels simmilar to the texture of the plain jane Sebenzas, or like the aluminium Benchmade 940. It's kind of like a chalky feeling.

These knives are a real treat. Careful because the edge of my Dark Talon has two chips in it. I'm not sure how it happened, the steel on my other two seems really tough. N690 is a great steel.

Extrema Ratio makes great knives. My first two were beasts -- the Nemesis and MPC. The Dark Talon almost scares me, it's got an evil blade.

Btw the chips my Dark Talon came with are microscopic and can only be felt with a fingernail.

Yeah the D Talon reminds me of like an ultra modern stilleto. It's amazing how it fits such a long blade in such a light narrow package.

I understand that. I used to only buy from the local places, but I don't have any near me that carry anything nicer than the cheaper models of Benchmade.
Thanks again, I'll be sure to ask about the finish when I call.
Yep! If N690 is good enough for Todd Begg, it's good enough for my poor self :D

Three cheers for Extrema Ratio!

If you ask me they are among the top 3 must have Italian knife companies. Extrema R, Lionsteel and Fox.

Fantoni and Viper are putting out such nice stuff now too. Lots of animal names. Lions and Foxes and Vipers.

Thanks RamZar, you just saved me at least $50! :D
Not Italian, but don't forget about CRK's Nyala! I've halfway wanted one for a while, but it's never been high enough on my list for me to pony up and get it.

Hi. ER is a reputable Italian company which manufactures quality products in our country (i.e. truly made in Italy goods). Overall, it targets customers with interests and preferences towards tactical/military styles and designs. Generally, it’s my impression, they tend to produce “overbuilt” knives, where e.g. the thickness of the blades and cutting edges definitely privilege robustness and somehow penalize cutting/slicing capabilities. There are anyway exceptions to this general rule (e.g. the resolza, the dark talon, etc. are examples of this). E.R. also seems to have a distinctive and almost exclusive choice of materials (e.g. forprene polymer and Al used as handle materials and N690 steel for most of their blades), though with some exceptions (wood, SanMai CoS steel, etc.) and this seems to be a hit or miss for many. Fit and finish on their product, in my opinion and experience, is good but not excellent (like I would define Lionsteel product instead), I’d say anyway fine, for their intended use. I find their sheaths and carry accessories very good both from a design and execution point of view. E.R. price policy it’s very much discussed in Italian knives forums and the mainstream opinion is the products are not having a good money for value ratio (considering materials, workmanship and engineering solutions) but this is – as usual – a rather subjective issue :). Another issue which is often discussed and rather controversial is the E.R. claim to supply military units with their knives. As usual, people quarrel about “evidences”, “proofs”, “facts”, etc., nothing new under the sun :D.

Personally I find most of E.R. products not very suitable for my type of EDC use and for my hiking/camping activities (as said, mainly due to their geometry and ergos). Anyway, I like their design and unique style. Among folders, I find the BF2 series an apt, well built and solid one. I own a BF2 CT which normally has a place in my rotation. The other folders series are just too “overbuilt” for my needs and not suitable for my EDC/camping or hiking tasks. Among their fixed blades I like the Venom (which I don’t own) and the Shrapnel (which I still own). The Shrapnel it’s a solid little knife, I have used it sometimes out on the trails but has been soon replaced by the F1, which I find more suitable and practical for my own needs.

If one likes their styles/designs and the materials used, E.R. it’s definitely a good and reputable manufacturer to buy goods from and, from what I hear, they also offer a good customer service. I am happy with their products I currently own and never had any issue in all these years.
