Received good feedback at the Wilderness Forum regarding a Fallkniven. I asked about the A1, but as I searched around, also like the look of the S1. Using for all around camp chores, woodswalking, fishing (no hunting) and general stuff...just want one close to a "do it all" knife I can rely on. Can't see much of a difference between the two knives mentioned, so I can use some help here. Also, are they still convexed and what about a leather sheath? The plastic sheath looks kind of strange to me.
Thanks,
Steve

The S1 would probably make a better all-around knife. I use mine daily in the kitchen and for hiking, fishing, etc. If you're going to use it around water then the zytel sheath is light and dries out quickly and may be a better choice than the leather.

I'm also a rabid S1 fan.Mine gets a lot of time in the woods doing everything I ask of it and then some and always comes out the other side smiling.

I agree. You might find the A1 a bit too big...unless you're one of those big-knife guys. For me, the S1 is at the upper edge of size for toting all the time in the woods. I think you'll find that it's a great knife. Very sharp and very reliable. And remember, it's called a "forest" knife by Fallkniven.

Since I prefer something more in the 4 inch variety, I plan on picking up something like the F1 in my future.

I think the A1 is the better knife. The S1 always seems too big or too small.

Went with the A1, Zytel sheath. Made a much better decision for all of your input. I own a couple knives in the 4" category, or I'd of gotten the S1. The A1 fits the bill. Thanks so much.

I have a couple of A1s and S1s. The two big differences are weight and grip size. Both knives are strong. The S1 is much lighter on your belt. The handle on th S1 is certainly useable but I prefer the more handfilling handle of the A1. I seldom think when I go on a hike that I'll need more than the S1 and its lighter weight and Kydex sheath make it the fixed blade I usually carry.

Depends on use . Less chopping get S-1,,more chopping get A-1. Don't procrastinate get both !

Bicause I'm a big guy I would go with the A1. 6" Knives are pretty easy for me to use. Love pairing them with a smaller folding knife. "all sufficient for camp chores" as Nessmuk put it.

I have the S1 with the hinged leather sheath. I like the blade size it's a good all around size. The only thing I dislike about the S1 is the smallish handle, If you have large hands you'll think it's made for a kid, too thin and short for my taste but I still like the S1..I'm working on a custom handle for it though..

I have my S1 wrapped and grip taped.Solved the smallish handle problem.Though I didn't find it all that small to begin with.

Just out of curiosity, how does the S1 handle size compare to the F1? Are they the same (I always figured they were)?

The post before pretty much summed it up, its either too big or too small.

I pair an Idun with a A1 or Odin.

Dinkum,
I don't know if that summed it up for me as far as handle size goes. I've owned an F1, and the handle size seemed about right for me. My question was, does the S1 have the same-sized handle as the F1, or is it a little bigger, to counterbalance the greater blade mass?

To tell the truth I cant remember much about the handle, I did feel though, that the blade was either too long or no long enough.

Yep, I get that feeling with the 5"+ blades a lot. That's the only reason I haven't jumped on the S1 yet. Got a lot of 4" blades that seem to get the job done OK, and can always pull out the machete or hatchet for something more demanding. Got one big knife (BK7) that gets used once in a while, but that's about it...

The S1 handle is a bit bigger to match the larger blade. It balances very well on the forefinger (just a bit blade heavy at that point).

It is definitely a convex grind.

I have the hinged leather sheath & love how it hangs on my belt.
