I'm wanting to make some custom F1 scales like the ones I made for my Becker BK2 :

From what I can see, the best thing to do would be to buy a complete thermorun handle and sheath rather than buying the blank.

My question is - are the rivet holes pre-drilled under the thermorun?

Thanks,
Marathonman

Thanks eonxbox360! Exactly what I was looking for. Any idea how hard it would be to drill through the tang with a drill press?

I would think it would be pretty easy if you get a drill bit that is made of harder steel than the steel of the F1.

I don't think it will be easy. Since the knife is hardened, so keep the cutting fluids at hand. and maybe buy a few extra drill bits. But i`m not a expert on drilling in new knives :D

Use high speed steel bit with alot of pressure and go slow, that should work fine... If worse come to worse, submerge the blade in water and heat the tang to draw the hardness out and try to drill again.

I've drilled through hardened steel before. Yes it takes time, and yes you do need cutting fluid, but it's not terribly hard. Tungsten carbide bit + cutting fluid should do the job.

HSS bits are weaker than carbides, but they may work as well. Actually they probably should work unless the bit is at the end of its lifespan.

The F1 has been a favorite of mine for quite some time. Has anyone had any luck putting a replacement handle on after they wore out the rubber one? I'd love to see the results...
Gabriel.

Hmmmmm.... I've never heard of anyone wearing one out. Not saying it hasn't happened, but never heard of it before. I would think it more likely to cut or tear the handle by accident.

There are those that have rehandled by choice, or purchased a blade blank from Fallkniven and started from scratch.

A search of this site, and knife forums, would probably yield some photos and other info.

you don't need to drill new holes,i used my A1 pretty hard without problems(handle is epoxied, and that's it),but cobalt or tungsten carbide bits, slow, not to hard pressure, with lot of cooling should make trough VG10.

Do a google image search for Fallkniven F1 and look for a pic of a new F1 next to one that has been sharpened until it looks more like a fishing or boning knife. It must've been used for years day in and day out.

The handle looks like it's in fine shape although the pic is of rather lousy quality.

I have been using my thermorun F1 for batoning quite a lot recently and the rubber is starting to tear a little along the back of the blade. That was what I meant by wearing it out. I'm going to get a blank and have a nice maple bushcraft handle put on it but I was also considering re-handling the one I have currently (myself) when it wears out as fun little project. Any idea what I should use to cut the slit in the handle?
Thanks,
Gabriel.

Really really nice job with that rinos, how did you prep the handle???

hey Rinos, did you start with a Blank or did you strip off the rubber handle and rehandle it?

i understand that the blanks are full width for teh handle while the ones sold with the rubber handle are a little slimmer.

That is definitely the rubber handle version tang... unless he re-ground it into a taper which I highly doubt. Also notice how there is no metal finger guard on it which come finished on the blanks.

I got it used, with damaged kraton handle,

so i striped handle and reground tang

Then i did same thing to S1(that thermorun handle was really too thin for my paws)

So i created new line for myself, curly birch Fallknivens :D ,as for F1 i like the way they are.
Fallkniven did made H1 in similar mode, but only on customers request, wander why they stopped?

Rinos,

Both knives are impressive. You did a great job and have a couple of unique Fallknivens you can be proud to own.:thumbup:
