Hey all, so now that the F1 Pro has been on the market for a little while, I was wondering if there is anyone out there who has had a chance to compare it with the original F1?

I've currently got an S1 and want to get it's little brother for a more versatile, lighter weight knife. I can afford the F1 Pro, but I'm wondering what people's opinions are on it seeing as they did change it fairly significantly from the F1. I much prefer the look of the F1 Pro.

So whats the verdict on the new knife? Grind profile? Thickness? Performance? New steel? Etc.

Thanks guys! Hopefully you can help me make my decision.

I love the Lam CoS steel. It's great in my volcano. Also had the kolt & GP with it as well. It's easily sharpened, especially compared to today's other powder steels. It get crazy sharp as well n it strops up into a friggin laser. Volcano is by far my favorite knife out of 40+ knives I own.
I like the new profile of the pro. There are a few videos out there on it. There is also the F1d which is.original F1 specs but in lam cos, black blade, n tan handle. Check out bushcraft canada. com for videos on most Falky' s.

I have and use both the F1 and the F1 Pro.

The new F1 Pro is oriented more towards toughness and rough work, but will do finer work as well.
The F1 is thinner and slices better than the Pro, but that depends a lot on how You set the edge.
The Pro looks a lot nicer with the stainless guard and the sheath is better than the old zytel.

Both are very good choices for an allround 4" blade.
If You do more of rough work, go for the F1 Pro.
For more medium chores, choose the F1.

Mikael

Is the handle of the F1 Pro a little longer than the F1's one? I own an F1 but would love to have the handle a little longer - just a few millimeters would be enough. Data on the net are contradictory, therefore I am asking before I order.

I love the new powder steels for their edge-holding qualities. However, there are still a lot of excellent 'traditional' steels out there, for a lower price. A buddy and I once field-dressed skinned a black bear in northern BC, he using a Cold Steel 'Red River' brand Elk Skinner in Carbon V (a.k.a.50100), and me with my F-1 in VG-10. Both held an edge just about the same; half way through I touched them up after they dulled a bit cutting through that greasy, gritty hide. The Carbon V was a bit easier to sharpen (using DMT Diafold), the VG-10 took a bit longer to get the burr off. Maybe the laminated steel would have lasted longer, but I'm not certain there would have been a significant difference. Just my 2 cents.

Wow, thanks for the info. I immediately ignored the new "pro" because of how thick it was. I have 4 of the originals. I will definitely be checking out a F1d.

I am an experienced F1 user. Liked it so much that I bought my son an F1. I recently got myself an F1 Pro. I love the F1 Pro. The COS steel holds a better edge than the VG10 for me. That’s in my experience in actual use in the woods (basic tasks). I like the steel bolster and honestly that is the only thing I really felt the original F1 was missing. The grind is fine, so don’t worry about the thicker stock. I like the F1 Pro a lot and am glad I bought it. Just my .02.

The handle! Does the handle feel different as it is supposed to be a little longer and slightly differently shaped? Better grip for a larger hand? Or is it the same? Would you mind showing a photograph of both knives together? Thank you!
