I would like to hear thoughts on the overall quality of the Thor.In particular I would like to know the size of the tang and how the buttcap attaches.

What do you think about the handle material and size?

Is it plenty strong for chopping?

Any info or pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know about the tang, but the butt-cap screws on. As for overall quality - very good, as usual with Fallkniven knives. Nice leather handle. I haven't chopped anything with it yet.

I was considering getting a Thor NL1 also. I hope you get more comments and you post some more comments yourself about this knife. It is a good looking knife and everything I have read about them seems like they are at the top of factory made knives.

JOS, get an old pot and fil it with beeswax and melt until hot. Soak that nice new sheath in it and remove after 5 minutes, wipe off the excess and rub in the wax with a rag.

Thanks for the picture JOS.
Did the blade come very sharp from the factory?
Can you see the lamination lines at the spine? If so are they straight and centered?

Thanks for any help.

why beeswax? does it do something special to the leather?

Thanks for the picture JOS.

Came VERY sharp. Once I cut myself only touching it lightly when I was taking knives out of my display case.
The lamination lines are visible on the spine, and are straight, and centered.

Kind regards,

I had one. Wish I had not sold it.

Unlike most U.S. designed bigger knives, the Thor is a pretty good slicer.

Although I did some minor chopping with the knife (trying it out), the knife isn't made for that purpose nor is it designed as a prybar. If you plan on using the knife for cutting, it'll do well. I considerd the Thor to simply be a bigger version of a "hunting" knife and not a "combat" knife.

Thanks everyone
I don't intend on it being a dedicated chopper.Just wondered if it was up to the task if necessary.Actually,I've never chopped with any knife.I have axes and machetes for that.I'm not looking for a sharpened pry bar digging tool either. What I want is a beautiful large blade with balance and refinement.

For some reason I just enjoy the nostalgia and romance of carrying a large bowie type blade.I gave away my favorite one some time ago and didn't realize the price and scarcity of these blades in the last several years. It seems hard now to find anything of quality in this price range that isn't a coated pry bar.

Can someone tell me if the NL1 has a MADE IN stamp on the tang and if so where?

The tang is like on all Fällknivens - practically full tang, concealed under the handle. No "made in" stamp, but Fällknivens are made in Japan.

The Thor is more than strong enough for chopping, and it does chop well by my standards.

The lamination lines are visible, but they're not always centered. The fit and finish on the Northern Lights series is far higher than in the regular line, but there are still occasional issues - the lamination lines may not be centered, and the grinds, at the tip in particular, may be uneven. If you intend to use the knife, then they probably won't be a problem (unless you get really unlucky and the grind/lamination is really screwed up, which can affect the performance, for example when the softer outer steel layer comes all the way to the cutting edge, but that's what the warranty is for), but if it's to be a collector's piece, then they may be an issue.

I like the Thor, although it is, perhaps, more expensive than it ought to be. For better bang for the buck, consider the A1 and A2.

I find the handle on my NL1 to be too small and too smooth to be a great chopper, it kind of twist in the hand...I leave the hard work to my Dogfather. Other than that it's a beautifull knife to look at!!!
