Fallkniven U2 or TK4?

Trying to decide. TK4 is around 50 bucks more than the U2, from what I can tell it is a hair bigger. Not interested in the smaller U4. I've watched absolutely stellar reviews on the U2, everyone seems to echo that it is the sharpest knife with the best edge retention they have ever seen. And that is multiple similar quotes. Unfortunately there really aren't many YouTube reviews on the TK4, except in German. Nein!!! Both knives have gone up in price in the last 10 years along with popularity. Opinions? Thanks.

Oh, and why isn't there a Fallkniven forum under manufacturers or anywhere else on here? Unless I'm wrong and my ineptitude prevents me from finding it (someone chime in)

I have a U2 and a TK3. Both are outstanding knives, but the U2 is one of the real gems of the knife world -and is very affordable.

I have both and greatly prefer the TK4. I haven't gotten decent edge retention from the U2 and find the steel on the soft side. The TK4 is a much more useful size to me. Even though they are supposed to have the same steel, the larger knife performs much better. It is worth it.

Thank you for the tips, please keep them coming. I'm interested in hearing anything I can find as video reviews are limited. Wish I spoke German. Also can someone please post a pic with the TK4 and U2 side by side for size comparison? I can't find anything comparing the sizes of Fallkniven's blades together... Thanks again. It's great to have a resource for information so readily available. Thanks BladeForums!

Thank you pipedreams308. Exactly what I needed. Any other thoughts? Looks like the TK4. I don't like where that finger choil sticks out on the U2 now that I look at it...

The finger groove/point thing on the U2 doesn’t really get in the way, in my experience. But you won’t feel bad about getting the extra bit of handle on the tk4. The U2 isn’t a 4 finger handle for my hands.

Ok. Fallkniven U2 arrived from eBay today and I have to tell you I am abysmally disappointed. I had been looking forward to this knife for a week, after watching numerous YouTube videos where everyone proclaimed it was the sharpest knife out of the box that they had ever seen. I even saw a video where Jeff Smith (Cutlerylover) used it to actually featherstick a HAIR on camera (seen through a jewelers' loop). It was amazing. Then I opened the box. This little knife will not even cut paper. I'm not talking about newsprint, or catalog paper, or tissue paper, this knife will barely tear through paper. My $20 Buck Vantage *SELECT* was razor sharp.

At almost the price of an F1 I am extraordinarily disappointed in Fallkniven's QC. Let alone the HUGE eBay seller that obviously never even opened the box to check their product. The seller also requested positive feedback by email before they even sent the package.

This is the problem with QC these days. You never know what you are going to get if you order online and Fallkniven is apparently the latest casualty.

Unless you can go to a knife shop and try before you buy... (apparently there are only 3 of them in the entire northern hemisphere because I'm not near one and I've only ever met one other person in my lifetime that lives near an actual shop that sells only knives where you can go in and brouse and handle the knives).

So do I go through the rigamarole of paying to send this thing back to wherever, (the eBay seller or Fallkniven in Sveeden) probably a restocking fee and wait a month to see my money or a replaced knife, or do I sharpen it on the worksharp and just pretend I have been using it for a year....? I am not by any means a worksharp pro, (I am terrible at sharpening which is why I have the worksharp and why I buy sharp knives to begin with). I kind of wanted to experience that stellar edge like nothing else on earth that people have been talking about. And for almost $90 for a 2.5" Blade, I shouldn't have to sharpen it myself... Thanks.

Time to learn how to sharpen a knife if you plan on purchasing more...

Gee thanks for the constructive input. What does that have to do with getting a knife with poor F&F? My issue is with lousy QC, I don't have time to constantly sharpen every new purchase I make, nor do I think you should have to right out of the box. It's my belief that some of them should come with an edge since I paid for one. It's the principle of it, at almost $90 + shipping for a 2.5" knife with a plastic handle I'm not going to go "ah, no big deal I'll just put a razor edge on it for them..."

Thats a bummer,I know what your saying. After spending sometimes, a whole evening checking out a must have knife, then after you open the package excitedly,it disappoints. After many years collecting/acquiring I still get the odd dud. My last knife came ground mostly on one side,it wouldn't cut peanut butter.
I have diamond, ceramic etc etc stones,I tried and tried and finally with tail between my legs,I had to admit I was defeated. I took it to a so called professional knife sharpener he got it to where I could cut printer paper, not catalogue paper. I was able to work on it more now,so it now cuts the thin paper, not like a laser but it will do. ;)

Aside from the dull blade, how is the quality? I have considered a Fallkniven folder, but I haven't gotten to the tipping point.

I don't want to rub salt in a wound but, all my fallknivens have been Sharp as a razor, centerd and top quality.

Yeah, I mean, it is a bummer, I don't mean to be a douche, I'm just a little ticked. I have an F1 and an H1 and love them both. Very sharp VG10 laminate. So you can see my surprise. I've been using ebay because I feel it's better to deal one on one with a seller who you can communicate with and in most cases since it's their reputation, they'll open the box and pick you a great knife so you're happy and give good feedback. I've also played the buy it and return and repeat game on Amazon because it's easy to do and free to return no questions asked and likely the second knife will be better. This is my first experience with a big box eBay store and I won't make that mistake again. It's a real Fallkniven. Has the hologram on the box, unless they can fake that, but it has the genuine feel to it. Lamination line and nice Fallkniven 90° spine, and crisp etch branding. It's just the edge is crap. The steel looks fine, like Fallkniven steel, you can tell if it's not. The handle is as expected, except for the pins that are a little crooked in their countersunk holes but it's what I was thinking it would be, more or less. You are really paying for the steel, grind and edge. Not the plastic. Thought it would feel absurdly small but it doesn't and it's not uncomfortable in the hand. I bought it because I was happy to pay for Fallkniven's quality, not just the brand name, having had three of their fixed blades prior. It's a simple knife, no frills, which is what I wanted. But I just was under the impression that it would cut like the other Fallknivens, or close, since it's not really a zero convex bevel like the fixed blades. I knew beforehand that there would be a secondary bevel because that's how the folders are supposed to come, but it just doesn't cut, it tears. I don't know what I'm going to do really, I could just keep it and sharpen it up because I do like the overall knife, I just wanted to see what the edge was like as it was supposed to come according to all the reviews. If this was Amazon I'd just swap it for another, but I was banking on the seller to do me a solid I guess as per past experiences. God I wish there was a knife store I could go to, and actually talk with real knife guys who knew what I was talking about... This forum is the closest I can get to one because all the knife guys on here speak the same language and can relate. Sometimes when you're talking with eBay sellers using actual knife terminology it's almost like you are explaining biophysics to a pug. Benchmade has their issues now, seems like every other shipped knife was ground on one side by one person and the other side by someone different, never used to be that way. You get the same thing with Case, I just returned one that looked like it was made on Hangover day at the factory. With Boker you never ever know exactly what you're getting anymore, even if it is made in Germany, it's made with Chinese parts that they don't tell you... It all just seems to be a crap shoot no pun intended. I
WILL say I've never had a bad Spyderco so Sal must be doing something right lol. There whine/rant over. Anyone else get a lemon U2 or are they all forged by viking angels with edges that can split half a c*nt hair into three equal parts...?

Could have been a return. Someone gets it, uses it, complains and sends it back.

I feel for you, it sucks.

Buying off EBay......

Sorry to tell you, I got a brand new U2 last week and it was the sharpest factory edge I’ve ever had. I bought it from the most reputable dealer in the UK. Might you have been skanked?
