Favorite Puukko knife?

Looking at adding a Puukko to my collection. What are your favorites? I know there’s a lot of brands that make them. But rather an actual Finnish one.

Any suggestions?

It’s a nice knife. But I’m looking for more than the style. Half the beauty of the knife is the culture. The wood handles, the hand crafted leather sheaths. The detail that the maker does. I’d rather find a very small Finnish company, or someone who hand makes them. Been scrolling for authentic hand mades on eBay.

Rather find the “imperfect knife” but with the perfect culture embodiment. If that makes sense.

I left you a msg on your page.

I've got some puukko knives that I like from Kellam, Joker, Terava, and Condor. The one that's my favourite is the one I don't have yet. At some point in the future there's a traditional custom or semi-custom puukko waiting for me.

So, some details are lacking.....Whats the budget? Handmade? Factory made? Traditional style?
There are a lot of knives out there that are just called puukko but aren't really....

Don't have one and won't get one. The only one I had was Mora Robust if that counts as a puukko.

Reasons being - I don't have need for one. My particular uses for knives are better covered by other knives that I have.
Also, it's not really my style either. I don't like not having any kind of guard and I'm not a fan of scandi grind.

That doesn't mean puukkos are bad knives tho. I'm the issue here :D

Real Puukkot have more of a saber grind......

Kind of, but also, scandi, Saber and V grind are all the same thing and I agree with that poster, I don't like them at all. However that's because I like folders. For fixed I think they're great! Mini Puukko for me is more like the Mora Eldris. I have one of them. I'd sure love something like it but in better steel and much better looking handle.

What's your opinion of Helle?

Scandi grind is what so-called bushcraft knives have. Its usually a very low zero grind.

Genuine puukkot have high grind lines and a micro bevel

Helle knives are generally very good, but a lot of them have very low scandi grinds. Ok on thin blades, not so much on thick blades...They are not puukko though so not really relevant to this thread.

Interesting, most the Helle I've looked at are exactly what I'd classify as Puukko.

And that first knife pictured is perfection. The second I have zero taste for at all.

Real puukko are made in Finland. Helle is made in Norway. So, tollekniv maybe but not puukko.
A pic from the internet of a tollekniv -

Similar in shape but the grind lines are completely different.

Scandi, saber and 'V' grind are "all the same thing?"

The Eldris isn't a Puukko. Neither are Helle.

I would suggest you start with a nice Ahti puukko.
I would agree with this. It's a good 'gateway' puukko, and if you decide it's a style you like after using it for a while, then you can dive into the higher-end/custom world. But an Ahti is a good user that will serve you well.
