I've been on a salsa kick lately. I've tried some snooty salsas they are OK, but I prefer a little simpler, with good tomato and some kick. Tostitos is pretty good IMO.

I friend makes peach salsa, it started out really well, strong hot and little bit of subtle peach. Lately though he's been making it with so much peach and so sweet it's like an ice cream topping. :barf:

I've been really liking the Herdez "Salsa Taquera" lately. It's not a very chunky salsa, but has a really great smoky flavor. In addition to being fine on its own, it's also just the thing to add a kick to tortilla soup.

i always make mine, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, & serrannos all diced coarse, mix and add salt, pepper, little garlic and some lemon juice, imho 2X as good as any bought stuff, add more/less peppers depending on how hot ya want it.

Pace is my standard food item at work. Usually breakfast, but it's also my afternoon snack, late night snack, and sometimes my lunch.

I've lately been eating a lot of El Pinto, "World Famous New Mexico Salsa." Great stuff.

The Chi-Chi's salsa is pretty good as I recall, but you can't buy it around here.

Herdez Salsa Verde is good for cooking with.

The best though is going to a restraunt that makes their own, and of course fresh celantro is a must! My mouth is watering like crazy now...

Can't stand salsa that's too sweet... and nothing sucks worse than salsa that tastes like ketchup.

Herdez Salsa Ranchera in either medium or mild. Love it. I also like the fact that it comes in small cans for a single use or a large glass container.

For commercially made salsa, Arriba! Roasted Red Salsa. They do a good green one too. www.ribafoods.com

I also like La Victoria chunky medium Salsa.

Pace is too salty and runny.

Try this:
Cut corn tortillas into triangles, then deep fry in hot oil till crispy. You don't even need a deep fryer. . . just heat some oil in a pan over medium low heat. Best corn chips ever!

For salsa, take a peeled tomato, garlic clove, jalepeno, onion, and let them brown a bit on high heat. Then, throw them into a blender with some cilantro, lime juice, and dried chili peppers and chop till they reach desired consistency. Try your own preferences on the proportions. You have to experiment a bit, but the results are yummy!!!

I rep. a company called Garden Fresh, out of Ferndale Michigan. They make FANTASTIC salsa that can be found in the Deli section of many major retailers. Jack's Special Medium is my fav.

Go online and search for Texas Firehouse Salso. The Habanero is the best but it will light you up.

It used to be Pace Picante Extra Hot, but they only go to Hot anymore and even that is not available in the Northeast US.

So far I've now tried:

Tostitos hot - Pretty good.

Paul Newmans - too sweet, hardly any tomato taste. :barf:

Cedar's Mexican Valley Fresh - Very good, good tomato taste, discernable bits of onion, it could use a little more chili pepper taste. I'll go up a level on the hotness next time

Amy's - between Tostitos and Cedar's - pretty good

I think I'll restrict myself to fresh salsas for future taste testing.

Pace Medium Chunky is standard---buy it by the half gallon size.

Honorable mention and surprisingly good---the Walmart house brand chunky salsa---comes in a real Mason jar if you are into canning.

Best salsa ever is at the Ponca City, OK. Airport-Enrique's homemade and their chips are Like Jamesh Bond said made in house. You can founder on just the chips and dip. Cheese is Mexican cheese melted -DELICIOUS.

I might get strung up for asking such a question in a salsa lovers' thread, but I'll ask it anyway:

Anyone know any good salsas that aren't chunky? That is, I want all the flavors of a regular salsa, but in more of a sauce form than with actual whole chunks in it. Every salsa brand I see on the shelf is bragging about how chunky theirs is, so I haven't had much luck finding one that isn't. I know I've been to restaurants that had such a thing though. Perhaps they just made it on their own... I really should have asked.

Ok, let the lynch mob begin :D

Don't feel bad, my daughter likes it the same way. Do you have a blender or food processor? Just find one that you really like and blend it up.

I used to like smooth only. But in the last year or so i changed, mostly because the available variety of smooth was pretty slim.

The blen it up yourself idea is a good one.

I wish I had a huge bowl of salsa from "Casa Rio" in San Antonio, TX. Damn good!
