Just wondering what good swordfighting movies to see are out there. I prefer Japanese swords, but like most good movies. What do you guys think is good. And can be found in a vidoe store in CA, USA.:D

Hello ERINT,
I reccomend you Japanese movie "Twilight Samurai".
It was showed last year in japan and received good reputation in general. It`s title in Japan was "Tasogare Seibei" but I think it was released as "Twilight samurai" outside Japan.
It has only two swordfights in the film and it is not the showy action movie like Kill Bill, but it has the reality of low-rank samurai's life in the turning point of era.
I think staring actor had learned Kendo or Iaido,so swordfights also looked good and had the reality. It looked diferent from the swordfight acted by untrained actors. Please let me hear your impression if you have the chance to see it.

Getting away from samurai movies for the moment, look at the coreography of William Hobbes. The Duelists and Rob Roy are my favorites. There are some very good scenes in The Three Musketeers and the The Four Musketeers directed by Richard Leister, but there's WAY to much wild swinging of rapiers.

Anyone know of any movie where a western style sword fighter decisivly defeats a japanese stylist? The japanese sword arts have very good stuff, but I'm tired of the popular assuption that japanese swords and techniques are the end all & be all of swordplay.

If you fed up with the samurai movie, how about the "High Art"?
I think this is the well made movie of knifefighters. Its outline story is close to the Kung-fu movie but it had the atmosphere of blazilian caos and stylish picture. I am sorry if you have seen it already.

Actually some of the best sword-figting movies comes from the Chinese cinema. They have sword-fights that boggles the mind. Too many titles.

check out "TABBOO" (sp?)
it is about homosexuality inthe samurai class...story is pretty good and the sword sparring with the bokken are awesome.

Kill Bill, The Hero(chinese movie with Jet Lee), Highlander, 7 Samurai, Lone wolf and the cub, Yojimbo, Sanjuro and Tom cruise's new Samurai movie...

To the contrary, Japanese sword fights are unlike Western and Chinese styles where 2 opponent blades clashes with each other...Japanese technics are more draw for the kill or terminate with a single slash, the 2 opponent's sword only meet when totally necessary. IMHO, clashing of swords will weaken the sword....

You need to go to www.taiseng.com
You can find all Hong Kong Cinema with awesome sword fight scenes.
Movies that are made here in America in terms of the Choreography of the fight scenes are lame compared to Hong Kong Cinema standards. Even the fight scenes in Kill Bill are "okay" compared to other chinese movies. Best fight scenes of all time IMHO?
-Benny the "Jet" and Jackie Chan in Police Story 2.
-Jet Li and Donnie Yen in Once Upon A Time in China 2.
-Steve Oedekerk and the cow in Kung Pow.
-All the fight scene in Ninja Scrolls, the Anime.
-Any fight scene with David Carridine, Just Kidding!
-Cowboy Bebop and the bad dude at the end of Cowboy Bebop the movie.

TKD,

You have your point there but HK stuff are too much of a flight of fantasy sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I'm living in Asia and have been exposed to EVERY single HK,china, korean, taiwan ancient sword fight and war movie so all this swooish-buckling is not alien to me. Some of the HK movies are high-wiring stuff, good for entertainment but to serious practitioners....it's plain insulting. Old movies from HK like "The Swordsman", "The shooting-star and butterfly sword" are some of the worthy of mention but the rest are just hilarious...

I guess the "Magic" in these HK movies are the speed and impposible stunts performed by mere mortals that captured the imagination of the western world....but i grew up with all these and to some extend, tired of it. As i grew older, my taste for "real" sword fight moves grow and the Japanese movies accurately capture such essence.

On the lighter side, the anime "Ninja scroll" amazed me and cowboy bebop is classy too.

Eric.

Another vote for my newest favorite, KILL BILL!

For SHEAR entertainment (and the Irony he is now our governor here in CA), Conan the Barbarian... C'mon, He trained in the far east, kicked it with one o' the Khans, and then killed Darth Vader.:D And as long as I have strayed into it... Yoda and count Duku go at it-not very realistic, but DUDE, it's YODA! Oh yeah, don't forget Talon in 'Sword and the Sorcerer'. That guy had a three bladed sword that Launched the outside blades and had a dagger concealed in it! 'Robin Hood Prince of Thieves' was raw-dog-not-so-fancy western swordplay in it, complete with a flying Scimitar. I LOVE HK Fantasy movies as well; Bride with White Hair, Swordman series, etc. (Couldn't leave those out and live with myself). Brotherhood of the Wolf was interesting to (Monica Belucci neked, yEah) see how Bone whippy sword things are a long forgotten material better than any modern alloy or folded steel

On the more reality based side:
'Valmont' a nice scene in a fencing school or something... 'The sleepy eyes of death' (Ah, the dreaded full moon cut), is another good one. Die another Day (James Bond 'nuff said) in the fencing school... Madonna oohh. This is gettin' too long so I'll hold out... for now...

Oh yeah, 'Cyborg', that's right Jean Claude Van Damme:barf: ... WORST knife fighting- only saving grace is the extensive Kukri usage- One debacle of a film.

I'm a nerd.:)

The Lord of the Rings series
Shinobi no Mono series
The Patriot
Gladiator
Braveheart
Hakkenden
Ninja Scroll
Army of Darkness :D - probably some of the funniest medieval combat scenes.

BABYCART Series!!!

Ogami Itto is such a cool bastard...

I think they've got like different names for the movies...It might also be called Lone Wolf and Cub...

Violent as hell...watching Kill Bill reminded me a lot of the Babycart movies...

Swords: The Duelists, Braveheart, Rob Roy
Knives: The Hunted, Gangs of New York, Exposure (w/Peter Coyote)

I'm sure there are some I just can't remember....
