What is your favorite knife to take out into the woods with you and why?

I have a few, and it's usually hard to choose.
The Jarvenpaa utility knife
Almost anything Mora, such as the classic 2, the Kansbol and the companion.
the GEC H10
and most recently a CPK Kephart, which is probably hands down the knife, except that it's a little on the heavy side.

They all have simple things in common- they're solid fixed blades, I can sharpen them in the field, and I like how they feel when I use them.

If I know I'll be out in a place where there's wood to make walking sticks, I'll take a BK 4, or a BK 9 if I want the extra mass. They are solid, resharpen easily, and I have dangler sheaths for them that I prefer on a hike. I actually prefer a HI Kukri for wood, but the sheath is less ideal and I haven't gotten around to making a new one. If I don't think I'll get a chance to do any carving, I take a BK 15 because it can still do the same tasks in a pinch--just takes longer.

I also carry a Spyderco Delica Salt in a pocket, on the rationale that sweat or a surprise plunge are no big deal with that steel.

I'm more of a hiker/backpacker so a good folder is preferred for me. As usual, I'm gonna plug a Sebenza, it's just what I carry most of the time in the outdoors as well as "normal" life (and a small Sebenza at that) and it's plenty for the vast majority of my knife needs day to day.

For times I do carry a fixed blade, it's usually something smaller but still capable... my favorite for the last couple years has been this Gossman UNK with a whopping 3.25" blade. It's plenty for what I do though.

My favorites when I'm out hiking/backpacking have been simple, relatively lightweight fixed blades.

Mora Companion (or almost any Mora) or a Becker BK16.

Great cutters, easy to carry, and robust enough for most things. Neither are going to baton giant rounds of wood... but thats not really a thing I do anymore.

We go into the desert wilderness, canyons and mountains more than a hundred times a year and travel light but with good protective rain gear and light down insulation, hydration, navigation necessitates and a small stove/mug setup in cooler weather. I’ll usually carry one of the pieces below. I’ve used the various grinds a bunch and have found FFG is the most useful for me.

For the last year and a half I’ve only carried the bottom piece, the amazing Dragonfly in K390 at 1.16oz and no sheath to collect grit that dulls my blades. With the proper gear so I can easily stay warm and dry. I really don’t need anything else.

Most of my life I carried either a KA-BAR USMC or RAT Cutlery RC6, and if I’m staying overnight it’s the RC6 with a folder, usually the Spyderco Manix2 LW.
If just going out for the day, lately, it’s been the CS 4MAX. Very capable outdoor folder. Gave the USMC to my nephew some years back.
Been wanting a fixed blade in the 4” range, but haven’t put much effort into finding one.

Recently bought this Endura for my outdoor/camping folder, but haven’t put it to task yet.

Depends what I'm doing in the woods, quick hike? Whatever I'm edc'ing. Probably one of these:

Gonna spend a little more time chopping or hacking? Probably one of these:

Gonna spend a good amount of time clearing or chopping? This one:

If I need more firepower than the 1311 I'm bringing the stihl 362cm 😂

The Kabar Becker BK9 is my most used outdoor knife, I always carry a locking pocket folder as well it just depends on the day what model. Between the two I can do anything I need done, I will sometimes carry a Busse TGLB because it's a fun knife and has been thinned out a bit and convexed. I've been meaning to to mount a Mira to my BK9 sheath for a more complete outdoor package.

The folder is the constant variable when I go in the woods. It's usually whatever is in my pocket at the time. When I know I'm going in the woods though the BM Griptilian or the Bushcraft is what I grab for my hip. Both have outlived their respective sheaths and the Grip out lived, well, it's grips.

Yeah. It's a bit silly. But for camping I tend to carry a skrama. Because I use it to chop fire wood.

For bushwalking. A folder and recently a pig sticker or my demco freereign. Just because we have a few feral pigs in the area. And I fell better having something to smash them with if they come at me.

I'd like to pick something custom up from one of the makers here, but for the past couple of years my hiking fixed blade has been this little Benchmade, carried in the hip belt of my pack for easy access. It mostly has sliced lots of apples to be honest.

For my pocket folder it is often the Taggedout. I had all intentions of replacing this one with the new Magnacut Water series folder, but just didn't get around to it this year. I also usually carry an SAK, even though I often carry the Swisstool as well.

Then, I like to carry this LW Manix when I'm going up to glacial/alpine lakes that make for good pics with the scales. I'll likely attempt to swap the 20CV blade with Magnacut at some point (it has riveted construction but not on the pivot).

David Marys for outdoors activities! Just got my favorite for such things. Haven't even had it in the woods yet but will be rectifying that situation next weekend. Already know it's the favorite though. lol

Great looking knife. He is building me a SFB XL with no swedge and some crazy neon yellow Grip-tec scales. Looking forward to getting it dirty at my remote cabin.

I carry orange Endura’s because they are super light, crazy sharp, easy to touch up, and bright if I set them down in leaves/brush/snow.

SAK SwissChamp. Have carried it lots of places and I love having it along. The SAK saws, scissors, and tweezers are awesome!

Fixed blades are my weakness. I have quite a few, but these are my favorites for being in the woods.

CPE MagnaCut tanto rides on my snowmachine bib straps when going out in the snow. I get very wet in the snow and the MagnaCut has been amazing. Paul makes incredible knives that are very comfortable.

CPK Kephart- it does so many things well and I love simple designs that work.

CPK SDFK- a phenomenal knife that can handle anything. D3V- holds a phenomenal edge. Pretty perfect. If it is not on my belt, it is in my pack when off the road regardless of what I am carrying.

Mike Deibert Chopper- beautifully crafted large knife that makes me smile when I carry/use it. It helped me clear 1 1/2 mile trail/driveway to my cabin site and has a special place in my heart.

Dozier Professional Guides Knife- just a great knife that does most things really well. Dozier made me see how great D2 can be. That knife has been many miles in many places.

Volunteer Knife- Model 11 and 12. Great knives with great designs, 3V steel, great ergos, great sheaths, (Love them). Gratifying to drop limbs with, but able to cut up a steak.

Terava Skrama 240- the more I use it the more I love it. Chopping, feathersticks, draw-knife, easy to sharpen- it will do it all. Price is amazing. The extra long handle allows it to pack a bigger punch than expected, while allowing fine work as well.

Terava 110- ugly but great knife that is very stout towards the tip to allow prying in things. Super comfortable handle big enough to wear gloves. Holds an edge but touches up quickly.

I need to take a pic of it, but I have an OG Fiddleback Woodsman from before Andy was a full fledged maker. Simple, hard-working, and up for whatever life throws your way. There are probably pictures floating about carrying my 2 year old daughter with it on my hip. She's 14 now.

I have a lot of knives I carry with full confidence, but that thing Andy spun up for me many, many moons ago is something I will always treasure and happily carry on the woods and across all manner of country.

Swiss Army knives are my absolute favorite but, if I had to pick one single blade folder and/or one fixed blade it would be these:

The ergonomics of both are perfect for my hands with no hot spots. The sodbuster blade shape and full flat grind that both have just land in my wheelhouse.
