I cut some clear fiberglass packing tape at work today and after about 6 cuts thru 2" wide tape my sak blade was dull. I had used the sak earlier to shave some missed hairs under my nose, it shaved perfect. It took about 5 minutes to resharpen, usually it take 2 strokes on each side to sharpen.

I think all the edge tests, should add the fiberglass packing tape test. It will give the edge a workout. I could not believe that the fiberglass tape would dull a knife so fast.

Hey, you're cutting glass ... with a blade made of cheese ... glass is harder than most cheeses ... what do you expect....

Seriously, it is hard on edges and would be a good material for testing edge retention.

Randy - The difficulty is edge testing materials is in consistancy of material.

Strapping tape is excellent for "removing edges quickly". However, is the strapping tape made in Caifornia the same as Georgia? or Finland?

That's an interesting question. I expect we can get the same brands of strapping tape anywhere in the US and Canada (at least). I've been advocating cardboard for a no-buck readily available material to test edge retention on, but strapping tape tests might be more consistent especially if we standardize on one brand, and expense shouldn't amount to much ... it doesn't take much of it to dull an edge.

Whatever you use for materials, if you compare to a standard knife such as a SAK or old-model Ka-Bar that calibrates your test -- but that might not even be necessary if we can standardize on one brand of strapping tape, or if we find different brands give the same results.
