I have a order for two fillet knives and the customer wants a spoon on the end for cleaning out along the back bone, the blades will be ats34. Any ideas how anyone would do these. I thought of forgeing it in but am open for other ideas, thanks.

That is a tough one Allan. The only thing besides forging that comes to mind is to make a die set and press it into shape. But that will be some work too.Good luck on this one and let us know what happens.Dave:)

Can you forge ATS34? I thought it was too hard under the hammer, but I don't forge so I don't really know.

how about buying some ats34 or other ss spoor and mortising out a scale to put it under then pin the scales, spoon and tang together. I think Ive seen Ats 34 table wear at koval,or jantz....good luck, hey dont some swage blocks have spoon shapes in them usually teaspoon, table spoon, and serving spoon?

Well now, I have done 440-C by simply heating and hammering on a cuped surface. I worked well. I did this before getting the blade heat treated. There is no worry of making the steel too soft.Frank Niro

I have made a couple of these. I used ATS-34 cold before heat-treating and pressed a ball bearing (about 1" dia.) into it with a thick aluminum backing. Press the bearing into the aluminun without the steel first to get an idea of the depth. Fillet knives are very thin so this works well. A thick tang will take much more pressure but should still work. My press is about 25 tons and barely grunts. Just grind away excess steel around the spoon. Polish the inside of the spoon before pressing it because its a pain to do later.

By cold, do you mean a cold heat, or room temperature cold for both the steel and aluminum? Thanks.

And here I was thinking this was about the whole sharpening-your-spoon prison shank concept...

Oops.:o

Thanks for your replys, I think i will try the method Bruce suggested as that should give me more control Thanks again.

Yeah, by cold I mean no heat at all. The ats is soft when you buy it and will form nicely. "Try it Youll like it"
